<< LOL, some of you guys are real characters. :)

So what should be done? Should that evidence just sit there while some rapist remains free and justice not come to the victim? There are 500 thousand smoking guns sitting in a warehouse(figuritively(sp)) and you don't care because of the fabled "slippery slope"?
>>

No, there are no 500000 smoking guns there. The only ways 500000 samples are going to lead to conviction is if you get a DNA match to some suspects for all those 500000 kits. And to take massive DNA tests for a lot of people just for a chance there is a match is wrong.
If there is a probable cause and DNA evidence could confirm the suspicion, then go ahead and use it. But without probable cause, its an unreasonable search. There has to be a reason to compare a rape kit to a suspect's DNA. To go around comparing a rape kit to every piece of DNA you can get your hands on will eventually lead the government to collect DNA evidence on everyone to get the most coverage.

I'm sure the courts won't allow random searching and taking DNA samples of people. It will probably be tested against convicts, or those identified by their victims. Even if they WANTED to go door to door and take everyone's DNA samples, you know there'd be rioting over anything like that.

i think the government should keep DNA from crime scenes and try to match them with suspects. you can find answers with 99% accuracy, makes it a lot easier to pull the trigger when you know you got the right guy.

Hey dumbasses you do know, the only thing the rape kits have are vaginal/anal/throat cultures of the VICTIM, and possible hair folicles. They dont go around testing people. 95% of the time police departments dont bother following up on rape cases, where the victim can't id the criminal, because they are strapped for cash, and cant afford to process the rape kits.

They then proceed to check that against the, database of convicted sex offenders...

I have no idea where you come up with the idea they are doing DNA tests at random, creating a national DNA database, etc. They are just testing evidence collected.

<< And the next step is to take a blood sample from every baby born in the U.S. at birth to be indexed and categorized in to the national DNA database. Sorry, I don't trust anything that b!tch says or does. >>

that is already being done in the military.

wrong, you hear it a billion times on TV "the suspect's semen was found at the scene" or "the DNA from the hair matches that of the suspect"

Slipery slope should sometimes be considered with these issues, but never mistake it for a valid logical argument.

When people commit crimes they give up some of their rights. I dont think being sampled for DNA is unreasonable. I share your distrust of the government on this general issue. They have been sampling the military for several years now often against the wishes of the troops.

However in this specific instance of sampling criminals I completey agree that it should and must be done.

indexing criminals is a good idea, here in Canada criminals actually have more rights than non criminals....

i saw a report on TV explaining how Canada spent a ton of money on the indexing DNA system then scrapped it because it was deemed against their rights or some stupid thing. the lady who did the report went on to explain tons of instances in Florida where the system is being used and several violent criminals were caught because they were picked up on a simple robbery of a convenient store. 1 guy test for robbing a liquor store turned out to be the guy who raped a woman and he got jail for that, there was also a muder solved because a guy was caught shoplifting CDs in an HMV

indexing criminals is a fantastic idea,

Well duh vaginal/anal/throat swipes will have the perps semen on it, unless they used a condom(highly unlikely). In most cases the only physical evidence is whats left behind on/inside the victim. Semen, blood, pubic hair. Thats what rape kits contain... They would also likely contain the victims panties.

What do you think a rapist does to someone they are raping? Bakes them a cake? Don't you think if they raped someone they would leave something in the other person that can be traced?
