What makes you state that this is the reality of Islam ? I'm a muslim and I can tell you that those people do not understand Islam well. They are right about some things like women should wear veil ( it should cover her hair ). But they are not right about many things like women travelling more than 48 miles with a mahram or women staying home or that Taliban was a valid Shar'ee government.

EDIT : And treatment of women is not good everywhere even in the US. Islam teaches us to treat women well and in a gentle way. Muslims who treat women bad either do not understand Islam or do not apply it.
 
If they told you that women should stay home or the likes of these things , they don't undestand Islam. There are extremests in every religion. I'm sure you know there are some wacko Christians and Jews also. And this fatwa about video games you qouted supports the fact that these people don't know jack. I'm a Sunni.

Mo prophecised that there would be 73 sects of Islam before they day of judgment and that only 1 of them will go to heaven whereas the rest will go to Hell. The hadith you mentioned about the 73 sects is not right. Things that happen in Darfur happen worldwide; example one, example 2. It is just that some people like to do it in the name of the religion. The world is still a jungle. It is not that perfect place.

How do we understand the hadeeth of the 73 sects given the presence of more than 73 sects in our time? Question:

The Prophet (sal Allaahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said: ?The Jews split into 71 sects, and the Christians split into 72 sects, and this nation will split into 73 sects, all of them in the Fire except one?? up to the end of the hadeeth. So the question is: how do we reconcile this hadeeth with the number of sects (in our time) being greater than 73 sects? Answer:

These (73 sects) are the foundations of the sects (we see today), then indeed they went on to form subgroups and split up into many sects. However their foundations are 73 sects just as the Prophet (sal Allaahu alaiyhi wa sallam) informed.
