Highway patrol now catching speeders from semis

In Kansas, the KHP and Yellow Frieght are teaming up letting KHP run shotgun and target speeders from the cabs of Yellow trucks...

Would it be going too far to just automate the whole thing and monitor the radar detectors from a traffic control center?

They're allowed to enforce the laws of the road, as long as its legal. I will admit this is a rather odd way to do it though.

I'm against the idea of a public institution like police teaming up with private enterprise like this, but the part that pisses me off the most is obviously the part where I'll now be scared to blow past a semi on the highway. I hope this garbage stays in Kansas. Notice the article didn't say anything about making the highways safer for all, but instead talked about how it'll generate hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue for the state gov't.

I just got the hilarious (in this context at least) mental image of Robert Patrick in the semi chasing after Arnold Schwarzenegger in T-2

checklist for tomorrow at work: cancel all business with Yellow.

That's BS. effin Pigs.

Her ein california, the CHP hide in between big rigs so when you fly past the rigs, you never see that CHP in between them.

Why do you think it's going too far? I really doubt they're ticketing people for going 70 in a 71. Do you really think it's unfair that they're denying you your god-given right to do 90 in a 70, so long as you can't see any police cars?

edit:

Good. They just made the road a little safer.

I don't see what the big deal is.. a big yellow truck is pretty easy to spot, so don't speed around them!

the trucks themselves are not yellow, just the name of the trucking line. though it would be funny to see a giant school bus

The best way to protest a company is with your wallet. I can see mass e-mails going out saying not to use yellow freight now.

Ya, far be it from the police to actually attempt to enforce the laws you agreed to.

BTW, what is with the farm animal abuse tonight. Leave the poor pigs alone. I've never even seen one driving a car before. 😉

Sure. If you were in a position to do such a thing (assuming you actually do business with them in the first place), you'd at least have to explain to your superiors why you are severing your relationship with a vendor.

this is not about making the roads safer, simply more revenue. Same thing with the speed cameras on some of arizona's freeways. The locals know exactly where the cameras are, so they speed then slow down, speed then slow down. Creates an unsafe situation, not to mention the strobe light flash that blinds you momentarily. Its all about the money not making the roads safer.

The Kansas Highway Patrol last week began spying on motorists from privately owned big rig trucks. As part of a new, federally funded effort, a state trooper sits in the passenger seat of each truck and operates a set of five video cameras and a radar gun to identify motorists to ticket. The trooper will then contact a patrol car hidden nearby to issue the citation. The program is expected to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in ticket revenue over the next six weeks.

The self-righteous among us can pound sand. #1, I don't believe for a second that you don't speed. #2, this new initiative isn't about making roads safer. It's about making money. Yellow gets a high safety rating, the state gets more cash from tickets. It's not about public well-being.

Washington State used to have all kinds of off-beat undercover radar cars at their disposal...old pick-ups, cars of all makes, models, and years, even an old (58?) panel truck...Personally, I prefer Kahleeforneeya's tactics, where they (CHP) only used marked patrol cars (although they may NOT be the usual B&W units you're used to) and have set ground rules they have to abide by. Kind of makes participation in "the game" a bit more fair...BUT, they still are active in the "autograph exchange program", and do their share of fund raising...
