I was reading a trade magazine article about the markups on prescription drugs.

Some drugs, esp. for treatments of severe illnesses have disturbing markups when looked at price/mg of active ingredient.

I don't have any specific examples, but a couple of them were something like $1400 / .1mg, meaning it was a 14,000% markup.

That's about as pointless as bitching about the cost of the materials necessary to make a CD full of software.

So? If you have enough money you go buy some, what's not realistic about that. Anything valuable is by definition not easily obtainable.

I think you are confusing the definition of mark up. Mark up has to do with with the cost of production. The cost of production could have been $1000/.1mg... this would only be a 40% mark up which is more than reasonable to cover research costs.
