High school seniors drive RX-8 @ 100+MPH

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Investigators said excessive speed was a factor in a late-night accident that killed four Wakefield High School seniors Saturday.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. when, police said, the driver lost control of his 2004 Mazda RX8 on the Poole Road exit coming off of the new U.S. Highway 64 bypass.

Investigators said the car in which the students were traveling struck a concrete rail and then flipped over the rail, dropping about 50 feet before bursting into flames.

Witnesses told police that the vehicle was traveling more than 100 mph when it passed other vehicles and then ran off the road. Investigators calculated the speed to be 105 mph to 115 mph before the crash.

Although authorities have confirmed that the victims in the vehicle were four male seniors from Wakefield High School, their identities have not yet been released.

Friends said the four students were on their way home after watching the Wakefield boys' basketball team compete in a playoff game at East Carolina University.

Investigators say the car struck this concrete rail, flipped and dropped about 50 feet.

Wakefield High School Principal Steven Takacs declined to comment until he received confirmation of the students' identities. He did say, however, that counselors would be available on Monday to help students deal with the loss.

Even if the driver was at fault, there are 3 other lives that were lost here.

Yet another reason why my kid won't have car capable of that kind of speed until he/she can afford it. Christ my first car couldn't hit 100 EVER. I've tried, it was so hilariously slow, I didn't want to speed.

I remember the day I got my first car to read 101 on the speedo. It was pretty steeply downhill.

My old Subaru wagon had a hard time making it up long inclines, I was constantly down shifting. I think it would have fallen apart at 100. The 4x4 rocked in the snow and rain though. I was laughing at the RWD sports cars sliding all over the place.

I know EXACTLY where that happened. I've been in Burlington for the past two days so I didn't see the local Raleigh news. Where that happened, the off ramp for the new bypass, is really crazy. The banking turn from the 64 bypass down to I440 is sharp as hell and the turn is also steeply banked. The speed limit is 65MPH meaning that people are pushing at least 70-75 coming around the curve when in actuallity is should be more like 45-50 MPH.

I have come around the curve doing 65MPH in my dad's Nissan Frontier and I thought I was going to sh!t my pants. I did it at about 70MPH in my Mazda3 and I felt no better. Maybe I'm a puss, but I am truly scared of that off ramp...especially when there are cars beside me.

Seriously. Whoever bought a high schooler an RX-8 made a serious judgment error. Tough way to learn that lesson though.

Ofcourse I've driven like a moron. Ofcourse I take my life in my hands everyday when I drive.

But I never pulled a 100 on a highway EXIT, with three other lives at stake. Sorry, but that's got Darwin written all over it.

The new 64 bypass is about 10-12 miles of mostly straight road, three lanes each way, 65MPH. They were probaby pushing over 100 the whole way then got pwned at the offramp to I440

but he's right. darwin smiled upon these kids.

and no, i wasn't doing 100+ at that age because my car had a hard time doing 60. maybe darwin was after the parents and he got the kids by mistake.
