Like you never drove like a moron when you were that age?

Hell, everyday of your life, driving is taking your life in your own hands. How do we know that someone didn't see them flying up on them and pulled into their lane just to "slow them down"?

Don't say that 4 high school kids' lives are a result of Darwin's theories... you are an asshole.

Yep, I did stupid sh|t at that age. But not nearly as stupid as that driver. Which is why I'm still here, and they aren't. This story is practically the poster child for evolution.

Is it a sad tragic story? Of course it is. That doesn't make the driver any less of an idiot.

All true. I think edro just wants us to consider the other three lives that may not have had a say in this. As I said in the OP, who knows if they were encouraging their friend or not. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it sucks they died, but in my gut I feel they weren't doing all they could to make their friend drive safely. If someone I knew was doing that ******, I'd make them let me out of the car.

Seriously. Whoever bought a high schooler an RX-8 made a serious judgment error. Tough way to learn that lesson though.
Reminds me of the guy who bought his son some expensive sports car....a Viper maybe? I can't remember, but when he drove it off the lot he drove it in a ditch going around a corner like 15 minutes later; I think he killed his friend who was in the passenger's seat too. *shakes head* I've done stupid things, and not all that long ago sadly, but not with anyone in the car or anyone else nearby.

Holy ******, you must be a total idiot to think you can go on a freeway exit ramp at 100mph.
But then again, they could do it in need for speed, so you must be able to do it in real life too.

Funny thing is, I actually know this one guy that plays a lot of arcade racing games, and doesn't have the patience to properly learn how to drive a simulator.
He took his RSX through a turn at 90mph IN THE RAIN. He's a college freshmen, and his friend was in the car too. Lucky for them that both of them survived, but his friend was in the hospital for two months.
Moron.

But they sure are contributing to the FHWA's statistics and Darwin's "theory". With so many avoidable accidents that occur each and every day in the world, the Theory definitely makes headway into Law.

sure i drove like a moron. but NEVER 100+mph at night on a curve. thats just asking to get in a accident. this is Darwin at work here.

reminds me of some kids that were going into highschool the year i graduated.
last year, one ogt a new motor (he was 16) put into his camaro, he adn 2 guys went speeding down one of the most crooked roads in town.

one lived. he said they were doing 95 when he put his seatbelt on, he was in the back seat. the two up front were both 16 and died after the thing ran off the road and plowed into a tree.

This is why my kid will never drive a sports car until they can buy it for themself.

I bought my mustang when I was 17 and I have to say that the absolute top speed you should ever be on the first half of ANY offramp or freeway-to-freeway ramp is 70. I too have had tires smoking on ramps 😱

I didn't drive that stupid in highschool. I never have had a speeding ticket although I think this is due to luck/fate + I can talk myself out of a ticket. 🙂 Been pulled over 4-5 times before, and talked my way out of all of them. I guess it is because I don't go over the sppeed limit very drastically. I usually limit myself to 5mph over, or 10% over, if anything. Why would anyone be that stupid?

I've done 100 on freeway curves....

It's all about what your car is meant for, how good of a driver you are and what kind of shape your tires are in.

Man I look back at the way I drove when I was 17, and thank god that I'm alive...

I remember driving down the backroads of Accokeek, MD in the middle of the night at 60+ MPH with the headlights off with my best friend and I screaming like maniacs.... jesus was I an idiot...

scary stuff.

I agree that everyone drives stupid when they are young... but it is important for them to grow up fast, for the sake of their own lives. Maturity behind the wheel is so very important. I admit I drove stupid, never THAT stupid, however. I drove 120MPH on an old abandoned highway once, just because I could, it was a completely straight road. I only did that once and never did anything even remotely similar.

These kids don't necessarily "deserve" what happened to them, however they should have been more mindful that driving like that can end up with terrible consequences.

Damn kids shouldn't be allowed to drive with friends of the same age... they are only more motivated to drive like maniacs. I'd say 21 would be a good age to lift the restriction.

So, you'd rather have 4 kids in separate cars driving like idiots that 1 kid doing the driving? I don't know which is better, realistically, but both seem to be just as bad as the other.

Yet another reason why my kid won't have car capable of that kind of speed until he/she can afford it. Christ my first car couldn't hit 100 EVER. I've tried, it was so hilariously slow, I didn't want to speed.

Good luck trying to find that - even my 104hp Scion xB can hit 110.

umm can you say a model "T" with a inline 4? 😀

Driver was an idiot. The driver made a decision to drive at around twice the legal limit. The three passengers made a decision when they elected to go riding with said driver. Hindsight, being what it is, shows that those were bad decisions. Whether you have sympathy for the passengers or not, this was clearly a case of Darwin at work.

I'm glad no other innocent vehicles were involved in this asshattery.

I guess you don't know what the Darwin award is. Ignorance FTL.

I don't t hink it's necessarily an error buying a kid an RX-8. It's not exactly a fast car. Actual horsepower is somethign like 220hp, maybe less. Not like the kid had a Viper. And hell, my 155hp 240sx can do 100mph easily.

the only way my first car would have hit 100 is if you dropped it off a very tall cliff (92 ford tempo) hell my current car will hit 100 but its far from safe at that speed and theres no reason that i would drive it that fast (88 volvo 240 wagon), IMO no car needs to go anyfaster then 85 ever, unless its an emergency vehecial or a racecar, neither of which the public can buy

do i feel bad that darwin claimed the life of someone stupid? NO, do i feel bad that he took 3 others with him? kinda. however they were stupid enough to go along with him
