I'd tend to be a tad questioning here. What about utilities and such?

Seriously. When I lived on campus, my quarterly "rent" included phone, cable, high speed internet, air conditioning and/or heat, unlimited hot water and electricity. Now "in the real world" all the same costs about $250 a month.

the dorm my daughter was in last year costs 577/month. 576.66666666666. her share of her apartment (2 bedroom, split 2 ways, 3 blocks from that dorm, month to month lease) costs 367.50 a month. they have to pay electricity (but not heating or AC or hot water) and cable and their cell phone bills but they were paying the cell bills anyway.. so they really are coming out ahead, in the apartment. and it's her last year, some practice with bills before she moves on is good for her.. but I wouldn't have encouraged her off campus earlier.

was an apartment-style upperclassman dorm, my son's freshman dorm is more reasonable, 386/month 2 to a room suite-style freshman dorm..

well since he's going to be in boston good luck finding cheap housing and finding room to house all that equipment. I remember it was 1200 just living on the outskirts in a 1bdrm apt (30 min to campus by the T).
