This was kind of in a transitional phase, but I had a decent amount of stuff crammed into the room.

tv off its stand to make room

That room was about 12x10.

Oh, and I don't see anything high end on your list ;)

Hey it's pretty high end for a HS senior :). Plus I just upgraded the reciever a little while agon from a 7 year old 5.1 panasonic in the box reciever. My ears haven't yet stopped orgasming :D

Go, CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP with a soundsystem, particularly in a dorm or apartment. Don't worry about mind-numbing bass. Get some cheap ass <$100 set of surround speakers and a decent receiver/components. It's not worth it. Seriously. Go cheap. Anything else is simply overkill for a dorm room. That way, if anything gets bumped, cracked, broken, it's easy to chalk it up as a loss. Ditto on the headphones comment. Dorms and/or apartments + Big soundsystems = headaches for you and your neighbors. I have little doubt that you'll still take your expensive stuff to college, but one day you'll recognize my wisdom, damnit. ;)

There are sometimes ways to live alone in a dorm but I would recommend against it.

Hmmm, I know my dad is just itching for me to leave my stuff home. Maybe I should live the college life and then come home everyonce in a while for hte theater experiance :). Do women tend to steal? I have simmons and emuneual college as my safety schools. They only turned Coed 2 years ago :)

I HIGHLY recommend getting by with the bare minimum at college, at least until you have your own place, ESPECIALLY for just a 12x10 room. You can If you really want, throw your expensive stuff into storage :)

in my first year of college, I had a Klipsch Promedia 5.1 (original), and that was a bad idea as it didn't have any change of being turned up to even a quarter volume without disturbing everyone on the floor. Do what I do now, and get a nice set of headphones (Grado sr80s) and be done with it. Also, try to consolidate as much stuff as necessary, as the extra available space would make a huge difference. I strongly recommend foregoing a TV, and just get an extra large LCD for your desktop along with a TV Tuner Card. A multifunction printer also comes in extremely handy.

b4 I went off to college I was told to take just some really nice headphones 'cause no one down the hall would want to listen to my music.
Well I ended up taking my logitech z2200's with me 'cause I couldn't stand the headphones, but those are only 2.1 with like 200W max I think so nothing really big. If you take your stuff just keep it low after about 11 or so. During the day, PUMP IT UP :D
BTW, if you don't want anyone walking in and stealing the stuff, you do realize they give you something called a "KEY" that locks the room ;)

That's nothing I'll have a $2000 TV, $2200 Stereo System, $2500 Computer, $1700 Laptop, and about $2000 of cloths. So $10,400 of stuff in a 12x10 room.

you're a little too proud of the value of your stuff.. you'll be happier in the dorm if you have the stuff, enjoy the stuff, and keep the pricetags to yourself. :) just a little friendly advice.

a 12x10 room isn't going to do justice to that sound, even if you manage to find yourself alone in the dorm and able to crank it up. or a 2000 tv.. geez.. are you gonna be able to get far enough away from that tv in a dorm room to see the whole thing? but.. take it with you if you want. just make sure it's adequately insured, and then there's really no worries..

you'd really be better off like someone else said with good headphones.. and.. a lesser tv.. geez.. and a ps2 with plenty controllers, nice ddr mats and extra mics for karaoke revolution. girls like karaoke revolution.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's bad stuff but my own stuff (and yours) is barely midrange depending on what scale you're using.

Something you might want to think about is bass shakers. The sub is going to be the most bothersome component in the system... turning that down is going to make a big difference. Bass shakers will keep you rumbling with the sub lower.

If you get responsible roommates they should leave your stuff alone. I'm living with two guys and my gf now and they know not to set their beer cans on my surround speakers etc. ;)

I wouldn't bother, but if you are going to take nice things to college, just make sure they are insured. That's what I did with my computer, just in case something were to happen, since I guarantee your school has a "no liability" clause in your housing contract.

yeah...with a system like that..it really is better to leave it at home (this is considering regular sized dormrooms here).

Exactly! Spend a little bit of money to make the place a hangout spot. You don't need to spend a bunch to do that. Forgive me as I live vicariously through you.

the best sound system in college is a good set of headphones. Sorry it's the truth.

I had z560's i pretty much never had on : usually was wearing my HD570's or my mic/headset for gaming.

1) Live in the dorms. The freshman dorms your freshman year. you may like it, you may not. But regardless it's an expierience that will teach you stuff.
2) leave the expensive expensive stuff at home - the dorm's isn't where you show off how big of a wallet you have. Because the people you are showing off to may be interested... too interested.
3) I had my rig (which mad me nervous), a tv, the sound stuff mentioned above and it was fine cause it didn't take up a lot of space and met most of my needs. When ever i needed more : it was probally about time to go home anyway. I also started watching movies in theater since well.. i didn't have a home theater in the dorms ;)

Leave it at home.

I had a 23" LCD in my halls back in 2002 and it was SWEET. Saved a lot of space and it was useful when I was doing work on it :p

I'd tend to be a tad questioning here. What about utilities and such?

Dorms suck.

If you're the type of guy who likes to keep his stuff in pristine condition, and doesn't want anybody else messing with it, get your own room or own apartment to put it in.

It's amazing how much college has changed in just the last 6-7 years. When I started school people didn't have stuff worth keeping in pristine condition.
