DVI will do you little good even if your display has a DVI input because there is an additonal digital to analog conversion at the disply which can mess with the signal (certain plasma displays with DVI are the exception)
NOT TRUE

Not only will Digital DVI help PQ of LCD and some Plasmas; but don't forget about DLP and LCOS fixed pixel displays. I've seen this DVD player hooked up to a Samsung 46" DLP Display and it is absolutely stunning. With this set-up, the signal is never in analog format.

The vast majority will be better off with a quality progressive scan DVD player with analog component outputs.

That's simply not true. All display devices may be analog at the output end (DLP may be considered the only exception), but digital displays all benefit from a digital input, some more, some less. The difference is very noticable to most people with any sort of experience with digital displays or critical viewing though.

In terms of analog devices HD devices, you're probably better off with the Momitsu V880, since it has DVI-I. The Sigma Designs EM8500 processor is actually pretty good at scaling, most likely better than your display's scaler. The only material you'd be better off with a class leading progressive scan DVD player with YPbPr outputs (ie. Panasonic DVD-RP82) would be video based DVD's, which tend to be scarce (and getting scarcer).

There are some HD blu-ray designs floating around Japan, (very expensive) but there is not much content to watch on them yet.

True HD DVD players will be released in the US next year, but they will be very expensive.

Content will be scarce for the first several years as movie studios have an almost pavlovian response to new technologies. (which is to fight it in the name of copyright protection)

So this is not really a deal.

you are wrong. every review i've seen said this looks better then a dvd player with component outputs. I'll take the majority to the minority any day, just beacuse 1 person says its bad doesn't make it so, especially if 50 people say its good.

The difference in quality depends on your display.

If you use a digital display (LCD, Plasma, DLP, or LCoS) With DVI, then digital DVI will most likely have better quality than analog. (But these displays are less common)

The drawbacks of DVI on most other displays is that it must be converted back to analog.
If you use an analog display (CRT), then digital DVI would most likely have no additional benefit on quality because digital DVI must be converted to analog anyway.

As for the quality of the Samsung, I'm not saying its terrible, and if you have a digital display with DVI inputs, it might be right for you, despite its flaws.

But for the other 98% of people with Analog displays, (or digital displays without DVI) you can probably do as good or better with a progressive scan Panasonic for less than $100.
