Just think, a man recently defended himself from being attacked by multiple school children. Thankfully he was sufficiently armed to fight them off.

OP assumes that you need to kill every single intruder, which is not even close to true.

We're talking about self defense here, not mass murder. Scaring off or disabling the intruders is preferable to killing them all.

How do you disable them; injury?

Creates more headaches than killing them.

Does it make sense that civilians who've never actually faced imminent danger should be carrying the same weapons as law enforcement, who face real, deadly threats?

When the threat comes; one needs to be prepared.

Now I firmly believe that a 12 gauge shotgun (5-6 rounds) will be more effective in home defense than a 30 round AR-15; but each to their own.

One should not be handicapped/crippled in their capabilities.

Nice thing about using a shotgun is the point & shoot concept works great inside 15-30 feet and the impact will hurt. May not kill at the further range; but is will cripple the person. And make others think twice.

Either auto-loading or pump; you are not going to spray high velocity bullets around

Law abiding citizens trying to defend themselves. Bad guys rarely break in alone and under stress most of your shots aren't going to be effectively on target. Video does a great job of pounding that home with a very likely scenario. Do the math.

4 bad guys, you'll need 3-4 quality shots center mass to stop each of them. That means you need 12-16 shots, on target and good hits. You're going to miss at least 50% of your shots, and that's being generous you're likely to miss more than that.

That means 32 rounds is the minimum you should have ready to fire. Makes the AR-15 a perfect defense weapon. 7 rounds isn't enough, 10 rounds isn't enough, 20 isn't enough for home defense. It's a game of numbers, and magazine bans tilt the benefit to criminals who rarely break in alone.
