Thanks for that explanation. Is collision energy the main likely limiting factor? From what I understand the LHC can and probably will be upgraded to greatly increase its luminosity but there are no realistic plans to increase collision energy.

You might be thinking of the proposed SLHC upgrade. The one about to be done increases the strength of each beam from 4 to 7 TeV by 2014.

Sorry, I meant no plans to increase collision energy beyond the 7 TeV per beam originally planned.
