Yup, almost got killed by some skinny computer geek driving in a civic. I was passing him, god knows how far I have to go to fully pass the whole damn car, this idiot decide to change into my lane without even looking. Nearly put me into the center divider on the freeway. I bet he doesn't know he cuts two other cars behind me off as well.

Crappy parody, I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. /shoots Kilgor in the face

I just added a stick-on convex mirror to the driver side view mirror on my pickup. It makes a HUGE difference.
If you need one of those spotter mirrors and you're not towing something, then you have your mirrors set wrong. The center rearview mirror is for seeing what's behind you. The mirrors on the side are for seeing what is beside you. You should not be able to see the area directly behind your car in your sideview mirrors.

Your mirrors should be set up such that when a following vehicle's passenger-side headlight disappears from your center rearview mirror, that vehicle's driver-side headlight is just appearing in your driver-side sideview mirror. And when a following vehicle's driver-side headlight disappears from your center rearview mirror, that vehicle's passenger-side headlight should just be appearing in your passenger-side sideview mirror.

Thank you ever so much for the lecture.

At freeway speeds, there's simply no way that planar mirrors can eliminate blind spots, which is why my driving instructor hammered on looking over one's shoulder before switching lanes.

With my convex mirror, I have a far greater field of view in my mirrors and am that much more aware of what's happening around me.

SUV's should be banned.

It's just the corporations taking advantage of a loophole they set up.

I dont even use my side view mirrors.

And why would you hate anyone for driving an SUV? Especially with the whole 'waste of gas' argument. Do you hate people who have inneficient appliances? Or whose houses arent insulated 'enough' so that they waste more oil heating their houses?

I hate people.

Suv's have longer brake distances, so you better hope that SUV driver behind you at the red light is paying attention.

Suv's are extremely dangerous to cars on the road's in accidents. Imagine being hit by a Accord and then imagine being hit by a Suburban.

Suv's block road visibility ahead of you so you have to stay back like 300 feet just to make sure you know whats coming up on the road.

Suv's block visibility in parking lots. How do you pull out of a parking space when you got a SUV on either side of you and can't see oncoming traffic? SUV's need a separate parking space.

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. I have never driven a vehicle where I could not adjust the standard mirrors to eliminate all relevant blind spots. And with all due respect, most "driving instructors" are not well trained. They are just everyday people with no exceptional driving skill or knowledge. Yes a convex mirror gives a wider field of view, but it is not necessary if you can adjust your mirrors properly and easily 90% of people don't have a friggin' clue how to adjust their mirrors and they make the mistake of adjusting all three mirrors to see the same spot on the road.

The ONLY time you should have to turn your head while driving is while backing up. Mirrors should not be used to back up unless you have something blocking your vision through the rear window.

If you are driving in a SUV, you would be able to see fine...

If you are scared...stay off the road.

I never said I was scared. I was just pointing out facts.

So in order to have visibility on the road and in parking lots I have to have a SUV now? So people in passenger cars are screwed by your logic?

I love checking my blind spot.. it's amazing what the turn of your head can do.. like perfect driving records and stuff ;)

jfano: You came up with a typical ignorant response I expected.

You probably have no idea what I'm talking about do you?
In fact, I'll give you a cookie and retract my statements if you can even allude to what I'm talking about.

The facts are clear about SUV's. They accelerate slower (on average). They handle poorly. They brake poorly. They have poorer visibility. Most people who buy SUV's do so because they believe that SUV's are safer, but only because they believe that SUV's are most likely to avoid the inevitable accident. IMO, all of the above equates into SUV drivers being worse, on average, than other drivers. And my road experience has confirmed this. Most SUV drivers are usually involved, in one form or the other, of doing the one thing that really does cause accidents -- they aren't paying attention. They're on their cell phones, not signalling and not checking blind spots while making a lane change, etc. ad infinitum.
Hey, what do they care? They'll just run right over me... I'm the one who will have to die because they're too self-centered to actually pay attention while they're moving 3 tons of metal at 100 feet per second...

I've got a perfect record too. And so does my mother who does as I do with my mirrors. When there are no blind spots to check, there's no need to turn your head. :)

True, but irrelevant since it's not my a large enough margin to make a difference in the real world.

They handle poorly.
In the hands of bad drivers, yes. With decent drivers this is not an issue.

They brake poorly.
See my response to acceleration.

They have poorer visibility.
Uh, no. Almost all SUV's are easier to see out of because of a very large greenhouse and a higher ride height.

All of this said, I drive a little tiny Porsche 924S. I have no trouble seeing on the road or being seen. It's all a function of the driver. Quit blaming an inanimate machine for pepople's faults. The chief attribute about any thing is indifference. It is the driver's responsibility to know the limitations of his machinery and if the driver excedes those limitations, then it is not the fault of the machinery.

The problem in our country is not vehicle types, but a piss-poor driver's education system. Driver's education teaches almost nothing worthwhile about vehicular control or maintenance. We really need to institute a system such as is in place in Germany. Our current setup is shameful. The number of people here who can't ever drive a standard transmission or parallel park properly is just embarassing.

I am a bike rider, I hate people who drive cars. If a car and I get in an accident, I will get hurt. I think everyone should ride a bike because I do. I like to whine.

Sorry Zen - but I'm going to have to disagree. I would rather error on the side of over-visualization than under-visualization. If all that was needed was two flat door mirrors, then why does just about any commercial vehicle have a convex mirror hanging off the side of the vehicle along with the standard side mirror?
