Why are some people so fscking clueless about international politics?
At one point in time, the United States gave MASSIVE amounts of military aid to the Soviet Union. Tanks, planes, ammunition, artillery, rifles, machine guns -- you name it, we gave it to them. At the time, one of the most brutal dictators the world has ever seen was running the country, Josef Stalin. He is widely known to have starved and outright murdered upwards of 20 million of his own people.
He also happened to be fighting the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany at the time.
Does that make the aid wrong? No, it was entirely correct at the time it given. We subsequently launched into a half century of the Cold War against the very same country we plied with military equipment. Times change, politics change, priorities change.
Ho Chi Minh made overtures to the United States to support his fight for independence. Years later, he was our bitter enemy.
Hell, we fought the British for our independence, and we even fought them again in 1812. They are now our closest ally.
