Heya Fardringle, what's happened to your Dimes output?

You were coming up the ranks great guns, I was watching behind me seeing you get nearer and nearer, soon to pass, but all of the sudden your output has dropped. :Q

Everything ok?

(or maybe you're intimidated by my cane....hehehe ;););) )

He just joined Rosetta two days ago, maybe that's why, although Rosy and DIMES work together pretty well.

Yeah, Dimes seems to run fairly well with most other projects. I've got it running with SOB, no issues. :)

I had DIMES running on my three home computers and two at one of the offices I manage. It was overloading my come connection and Comcast started complaining about it so I had to turn things off here, and I put Rosetta on the dual Xeon I had running Dimes at the office since the server kept shutting Dimes off anyway (I don't know why).

So basically, I just have Dimes running on one computer right now that is too slow to run any other DC project. I'd like to keep both going but I'm really interested in doing Rosetta and the majority of the computers I have access too just don't have enough RAM to run Rosetta, Dimes, and the actual business-related applications they need to use.

Short version: I was running Dimes mostly just so I could satisfy my DC addition. It really doesn't have much interest to me apart from crunching for the team, and I'm very interested in running Rosetta (I like medical research projects), so the computers I have access to get first priority with Rosetta. Any computers that can't run Rosetta, and the systems than can comfortably run both, will get Dimes. But I won't be able to work out the details on that for a week or two.

edit: And Ray, I'm not afraid of your cane as much as the thought of you SHOWING me your cane. :Q

I know what you mean. Dimes seems to run ok at work, but it played heck with my home connection, especially the VoIP phone setup. So I only run it at work. I can see why you'd run Rosetta.

I was just curious, as you were the only one about to over take me. :)

edit: And Ray, I'm not afraid of your cane as much as the thought of you SHOWING me your cane.

Happy crunching! :)

LOL. I wasn't talking about THAT cane. :p

Actually, I see a decrease in SoB production when running DIMES. I wouldn't call it appreciable because I haven't actually measured my SoB cEMs/sec while running DIMES and with it off, but I get this strong feeling that it is so. I think it's because DIMES uses Java, which hogs up a lot of memory after awhile (e.g. Firefox with like ~20 tabs actually starts to creep up to about 500MB of RAM usage after a couple of days). My system runs with 2GB of RAM, so it should be okay, but there's a catch -- I run a crapload of applications 24/7 in addition to the two distributed computing clients. Basically, if I want my computer to stop lagging to the point that I can work efficiently on it or use the Internet properly, I have to completely exit DIMES. I usually run it anyway at night and throughout most of the day, but I shut it off when I want to play CS:S on the LAN for a short time with my dorm buddies.

Can anyone verify or invalidate this?

BTW, I am connected to the Internet via Case Western Reserve University's fiber optic Internet access, so I don't think it is a lack of bandwidth or my ISP choking my bandwidth.

I had the same problem. After a while - like 12 or 14 hours - of DIMES the java console was up to around 300 to 400 MB of RAM and the system became unresponsive. Exit and restart of DIMES always fixed the problem for me. Due to this unresponisveness, the other DC projects suffered a bit as well. I just got used the habit of restarting DIMES once in the morning and once in the evening when I ran DIMES.

So, yes, I can verify your observations BOLt.

:)

Odd ,I've never noticed that.
Though I've only just started running v 0.4.3

Which version are you guys running?

Thank you for posting your observations. I no longer feel alone in my own observations, nor do I feel they are unfounded. I find that restarting DIMES alleviates the problem, but I hate turning off or having to fiddle with any of my DC projects for even a second, so I hope someone will develop a better method for controlling the problem if the DIMES developers don't patch it out.

I am only using version 0.4.2. You bring up a valid point -- maybe BlackMountainCow and I should try the newer version. It might've been fixed. I'll check the version changelog tonight.

I don't seem to have a problem with DIMES and Rosetta running at the same time. I think my production is about the same either way. My bandwitdth does suffer though when running several DIMES clients. I have read about the memory problem. You are not alone BOLt. They need a slider bar in the DIMES program to allow the user set the amount of memory used by the program.

Assimilator1: Glad to see you got it figured out and are running DIMES again.:D

I can't remember which DIMES version I ran but I stoppped it about 5 months ago or so. I had probs with my ISP about "probing" other people's networks :disgust:.

Probably 0.4.2. I have been lucky so far. My ISP has said nothing. I am just keeping my fingers crossed.

Hmm...running 0.4.3, usually for 6-7 days at a time on my work machine, multiple desktop apps, browsers, etc...I haven't noticed slow-down at all.
RAM right now is: firefox: 92K, javaw 19K. That's odd, just a minute ago javaw was up in the 40's...I wonder if Dimes is shrinking memory usage periodically.

This machine has been logged in for three days now.

Yea Yoav ,one of the Dimes guys reset the password (which I'd never set AFAIK) & emailed me ,nice quick replies by him :).

Assim, glad you are back in the game! :)

And it looks like Fardringle is also back in the game, 30.0 days until I'm roadkill based on todays stats. :Q

lol assim. Although he's moving so fast, don't know if this old geezer could get a whack in or not.

30.0 days to roadkill, 03/07/06 :Q
15.1 days to roadkill, 03/09/06. :Q:Q

/me guides the RedRascal over to the berm, battens everything down in preparation for the backwash....

Bah! ,you want multi port multi injection fuel system for better power, economy & low speed throttle response:p;)

Though multi carbs do sound better :D

That's an awesome picture! You should put a fart pipe on that thing to really get the proper effect when tooling down the sidewalk to put those uppity young whipper-snappers in their place. And maybe a "Type R" sticker and a spoiler on the back to make it go faster. ;)

Or maybe you just need it to be loud so you can tell if it's running when the hearing aids are turned off? :D
