Viacom said 20 million customers would lose their networks. DirecTV said Viacom is seeking a 30 percent increase -- equaling more than a billion dollars -- in the fees it receives from DirecTV. Those costs would likely be passed on to customers.

If that's true, and the difference is > $1b, that's absolutely INSANE. I hope Viacom doesn't set another precedent for other media conglomerates to follow. Prices will be out of control.

So in reality we are forced to subsidize channels that probably shouldn't exist in the first place. Let's go back to 20 cables channels and they are all good.

This is just going to continue to evolve the content industry. People are already fed up with cable prices and they are getting rid of it. All the big companies are forced by stock price to raise prices all the damn time. This is our capitalist system at this point in time.

Let these companies die if they have to. What happens when phone companies and utilities companies continue to raise prices on consumers? We have to take it, we have no option other than to get rid of things we pretty much need.

The consumers need to take a stand. Demand the content they want for the price they are willing to pay, otherwise cancel. The cable companies can't offer 1000 channels when there are too many "good" channels demanding a premium.
a la carte

These channels in the early 90s used to be good:

History
TLC
Comedy Central
Sci-fi
Cartoon Network

They all now either suck or are extreme shadows of what they were.
True. History channel especially. There is no history shown on it anymore. A lot of reality shit on HC. Scy-fy is a freaking joke. All they show are really bad home-made movies that were shot in canada for 20 bucks. I find AMC and TMC the only 2 channels I even bother to watch. Mostly for Walking dead and big bang theory reruns.

SyFy always seemed to bend-over-backward to avoid showing any sci-fi that I would be interested in. They show as much fantasy and paranormal stuff as they can possibly get away with. As a fan of sci-fi, I've never *ever* liked this network.

Just look at their schedule for today:
  • 08:00 AM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Larnach Castle
  • 09:00 AM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Devil Dog
  • 10:00 AM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Castle Of The Damned
  • 11:00 AM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Shattered Spirit
  • 12:00 PM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Hauntings Of South Africa
  • 01:00 PM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Tortured Souls
  • 02:00 PM
    Ghost Hunters International
    Dracula's Castle
  • 03:00 PM
    Ghost Hunters International
    The Ghost Child Of Peru
  • 04:00 PM
    Destination Truth
    Vietnam's Bigfoot

Ugh!

I'm sure Breaking Bad is a good show (based on what other people say), but why the hell does it have to be on American Movie Classics?

Why does Music Television no longer show music?

My previous related thread:
IFC -INDEPENDENT Film Channel?

  • Sin City
  • Kill Bill
  • Pulp Fiction
  • The Thin Red Line
  • Apocalypto
  • The Prestige
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
  • Whisker Wars
  • Comedy Bang! Bang!
  • Bunk
  • Malcolm in the Middle

It stands out that every time I stop on this network, they're whining about the fact that they were dropped by Dish Network.

"You won't see your favorite independent films on Dish, because Dish has dropped IFC!"
"Call Dish and tell them you want IFC or switch your provider!"

...but I still don't see any reason for this channel to exist. They simply don't show independent films...ever.

So IFC shows big-budget movies from big-time directors like QT; and they also have original programming (including a game show). What's the point of having any specialized channels at all?

Maybe the whole thing will explode and people will end up realizing there's more to life than television, internet, and movies.

I know I'd probably be happier and more productive if I didn't spend so much time in front of a computer... but damned if I have enough self control to cut it off myself.

I can only imagine the chaos that ensues when Mom tells her little cherubs that there will no Nickelodeon babysitter today, or for the foreseeable future.

Bundling is much cheaper. Be careful what you wish for really. $100 for 100 channels or $80 for the 10 channels you want, something like that.

All the fighting the companies are doing among themselves would just be happening between you and comedy central etc. as they rise the rates of popular shows. There would be two pots at the super bowl parties, one to pay for the showing and the other for the stupid betting game lol.

There would be less new content if you can't peruse channels. If you really only watch 10 channels the content would get pretty stagnant because you won't really know if another network turned a new leaf and started something good. They wouldn't have much incentive to re-invent a failing channel with this model.

TBH i would not care if Time Warner dropped all those channels, i can watch the Daily show online, same with southpark

They used to show Independent films, documentaries and shorts....not any longer.

Interesting how people no longer have a say in telecommunications policy.
After we gave the cable companies franchises and guaranteed profits to build their networks, after we gave ota broadcasters use of public airways, etc etc, apparently we no longer have no say in anything.

There was a new Futurama on tonight.

It was to be a Zapp Brannigan episode.

looks like direct is unlocking all the encore channels as compensation for these channels lost

heh is encore really cheap for the providers or something? Dish gave last year free to a lot of long time subscribers, this year it's free for a ~month.

edit: oops starz was free last year
