A record number of consumers called the Federal Communications Commission's help line after a "soft test" that the organization hoped would encourage TV viewers to prepare for the June 12 digital TV transition.

The FCC's test led 55,000 consumers ? a single-day record for the help line ? to call in for assistance last Thursday. The line typically receives 15,000 calls per day.

The majority of the calls the FCC fielded were in relation to the government's coupon program, which offers consumers $40 toward the purchase of their analog-to-digital converter box. Fifteen percent of callers were concerned with reception in their area, while 10 percent sought instructions on installing a converter box.

As of May 10, Nielsen estimates that 3.3 million households (or 2.9 percent of U.S. homes with TVs) were still unprepared for the switch to digital-only broadcasting. Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps said this test was a success at alerting those households.

"This soft test did exactly what it was supposed to do," Copps said in a statement. "It was a wake-up call for consumers who are unprepared, alerting them to the fact that they need to take the necessary steps before the June 12 DTV transition."

More than 125 broadcast markets participated in the test, including at least one station in each of the top 30 markets. Participating broadcasters interrupted regular programming to warn viewers they still weren't ready for the switch and instructed them to call the FCC help line with questions.

They're warning way too much. At this point anybody who doesn't get TV after the switch deserved to either a.) not receive any TV or b.) pay too much for a repair guy to buy the box and plug it in

I swear on Allah, Jehova, Yahweh, or whoever you pray too, if people complain about the date again, I'm going to riot. How long have we known about this? All the people who still aren't prepared, tuff.

TV transition? What's this? They should really advertise it or something, because I watch TV all the time, and have never heard anything about it!!!

Well, I remember seeing something about a switch 10 years ago, but it can't be the same thing....

Yeah I'm going to rage so hard if they push back the deadline again. Doesn't matter how long you delay the transition or how many PSAs you run, there are going to be people unprepared for the switch.

edit: They only alert people watching OTA broadcasts because they are the only ones who will be affected by the DTV switch. Although I have seen quite a few ads on DirecTV, and I'd assume the cable companies run similar ads to tell people that if you have cable or satellite and don't receive OTA broadcasts, you don't need to take any action to continue watching TV.

A couple of months ago I canned Time Warner, bougtht two converters and two antennas, total cost $40, and have been blissfully watching free OTA TV ever since. I'm saving about $85/month and lovin' it!

I've heard different stories. One is that the air waves you get with regular rabbit ears will be turned off.

But I also heard that regular cable will cease to work and you'll have to get digital cable or satellite. Not sure which one, or if it's both.

Though the best place to advertise this would be on TV, and I have yet to see anything on TV about it.

Or is this a US only thing? It has been a few years at least though that they talk about this, it's just not that well advertised so I'm sure lot of people don't know.

I think it has something to do with adjusting the brightness, or is it the tint?

I heard that if my set didn't have rotary knobs I was golden for the transition.

Woot,

And here's to flipping tuner cards that can leave out that spectrum forever.

Am I the only one that simply doesn't care about those people who aren't ready for the switch?

There is an obscene number of people out there that think they will need to buy HDTVs or upgrade to HD sat/cable receivers/DVRs to get network television. Trust me, I work as a CSR for a satellite television company. Try talking to some 80-year-old grandmother living on $700 a month who was told by some Best Buy guy she will need a plasma TV to watch American Idol because her satellite system will soon be junk.

And now she's crying. And telling me about her dead husband. And her medical bills. And the government.

I live in the woods and trying to use an indoor antenna with DTV. Sucks. Time to invest in an outdoor antenna and get it put up. Allot of people will be pissed when once the fuzzy channels they got and were happy with will be replaced with freezing, stuttering channels from poor signal. In fact I know a few people who only get like Channel 13. So hopefully this all gets worked out and once analog is off, the digital stations signals will get turned up. Just expect to hear allot of pissed off people after June 12th.

Then you should contact your superiors and ask them why they don't have a commercial explaining that if you have satellite, you have nothing to worry about. I have Directv, and they certainly have enough commercials pushing their service. I've seen nothing addressing the transition from them, and that's a damn shame.

I agree with you though, at this point, most who still aren't ready are probably elderly.

Many Dish commercials, or just commercials in general about the switch? I've seen hundreds of commercials about the switch, just none from Directv explaining that if you have sat tv, you are good, or would be good if you joined.

Maybe they just figure satellite owners and potential owners have an i.q. over 70?

This gets compounded by the fact that up until recently, DirectTV was still digitizing the analog feeds for most of the Chicago stations. I would get these warnings on my screen in the middle of shows telling me that "my TV was not ready if I was able to read this message." About 5-6 weeks ago they flipped to sending the HD feed in SD and the messages stopped. Same channel on the DTV unit but now has the "FOXHD" (or whichever) symbol in the corner.
