In reading the "what web-authoring tools do you use" thread, I came to the conclusion that a great many of you think that notepad is the only text editor in the world. In fact notepadis a horrid editor for any type of code. When people talk about emacs, ultraedit, or my preference, editplus, they're not talking about WYSIWYG editors, they're talknig about real text editors, written for programmers.

Here's some screenshots of what a REAL text editor should look like.
NOTE: BEFORE FLAMING ME, LOOK AT THE SCREENSHOTS.

Screenshot #1 (html), screenshot #2 (Perl), Screenshot #3 (PHP)

Now please, before you start pushing notepad as the god of all text editors, learn what a real text editor is like.
Oh, and the "I use notepad because I've always used it... it came out first" excuse isn't valid either, VI and EMACS have been around a lot longer than notepad.

Honestly, though - how much *power* do you need when you're writing simple html code? ;)

Notepad all the way, baby!

Well when creating the code, there isn't too much of a diff, but when you need to edit code or rearrange an HTML file, Vi can be great

That's like saying "my pentium 233 works just fine, why should I upgrade?"

Umm, if the pentium 233 does work fine, why upgrade? What if all a person does on a computer is edit html, and they use notepad. I think a p233 can run notepad just as well as a athlon xp.

Why use Notepad when EditPlus is the quicker, easier way? I don't know about the other applications, but in EditPlus you can create new files from templates, search a document, and do all sorts of other useful, time-consuming things in a click or two.

well, notepad is always a few clicks away. sure saves a helluva lot of time (compared to a few clicks) when you have to download those aforementioned programs. plus, simplicity is always a plus right?

True, it might be not be worth it if you don't use a text editor a lot... but if you do, it helps.

Besides templates (and parenthasis matching) what does any editor do better than notepad? emacs and vi are supposed to be much more powerful, but if you want to cut a line of code it takes a dozen keyboard strokes, where as in notepad it takes 4... seriously, KISS!!! :p

if everyone had that frame of mind, we'd never make any progess in the world now would we? :) sure notepad works for what you are doing, but the other editors work MUCH better. thats all he's sayin. And he's right too, IMO. coding python is much easier in IDLE (The python GUI which looks similar to editplus)

this is like that one userfriendly strip

"I use notepad."
"I use dos edit."
"I use copy con."
"I use a magnet to rearrange the bits on the hard drive."

Nah, magnets are too easy...

I'm sorry I don't like the little colors in my text.. I'm sorry I don't like having to type in 10 control sequences to open a file... I'm sorry I'm not a M$ junkie where I'm obsessed with pretty designs of programs that actually make using them more difficult.... Simple is better as long as it still has basic features (hot keys, copy, cut, paste, search...)

Oh, and I still haven't received a reason why <insert program name here> is better than notepad... Templates are fine but who really needs them? Most templates I've seen are not written in a good programming fashion...

My personal favorite is EditPad. It's small, fast and slick like notepad, but it has the all-important Find and Replace, a cool tabbed window so you can easily toggle between a bunch of different pages, and a few advanced yet useful features such as "refresh from disk" (so you can see changes made by another program without having to close and reopen the file). And there are no pretty colors to get in the way of your pure unadulterated HTML code.

Yeah, I'm with the notepad bunch for a simple reason. It's quick and always on Windows systems. Besides, I don't really need to see a bunch of colors if I'm just writing some HTML.

That said, I use Interdev also, but I'm still writing my code by hand in the text editor screen. The reason I use it over notepad is so I don't have to FTP the file up.

Really, vi_editor may be great for many people, but I can't stand it. Just to edit a line you have to know some strange key sequence to edit the text. Even on UNIX machines, I'll use PICO over vi b/c I don't have to remember any combinations to do this and that.

As for the other programs, I haven't used them, so I'm not about to say notepad is better in any regard, other than the fact it's standard on Windows machines and it does the job. But, after reading all these posts and the other thread, I still see no reason to try any of the others. Colors on my code don't really help all that much.

Also, notepad dosent have line numbering. That can be important when writing long lines of code.

I use vi (NOT vim) for all of my text editting needs. Why would I need anything else? Plus, those colors are annoying :p

especially when your perl intepreter gives errors like "Syntax error on line 125" :)
