<< Oh, and I still haven't received a reason why <insert program name here> is better than notepad... Templates are fine but who really needs them? Most templates I've seen are not written in a good programming fashion... >>

Reasons editplus is better than notepad:

If another program updates the file you're working on, editpad asks if you'd like to reload it, notepad wont

Editpad's find and replace will search with regular expressions. If you don't know what regular expressions are, they're extremely useful for matching text.

Personally, I like the color highliting, I think it makes it easier to work on the file.

Editplus doesn't use the crappy newline character that notepad uses that shows up as a black square in half of text editors.

Editplus allows you to open multiple files in the same window

Editplus has a "save all" and "print all" function, so that you dont have to go hit "file - print" and "file - save" in each of your windows.

Editplus allows you to open a panel with directory listings for the directory your worknig in, click on any of the files, and you can edit it.

Editplus will run the perl interpreter in a panel at the bottom of the screen, so you can check for errors on the fly.

Editplus doesnt add ".txt" to the end of every filename by default

Editplus will allow you to edit files on an FTP server.

Need I continue?

<< Besides templates (and parenthasis matching) what does any editor do better than notepad? emacs and vi are supposed to be much more powerful, but if you want to cut a line of code it takes a dozen keyboard strokes, where as in notepad it takes 4... seriously, KISS!!! :p >>

First off... I use ColdFusion Studio which is similar to Homesite. CTRL-ALT-C brings it up for me (you know you can set shortcuts thru windows right?)... don't worry about how many clicks away it is. What does any editor do better than notepad? The biggest benefit I find in CF Studio is the fact that you can edit remote files on the fly, thru FTP or thru secure RDS. Tag & function insight... very much a time saver as well. Extended SEARCH & REPLACE thru directories and subdirectories for any strings you desire... think about how much time that saves if you have many files in many folders.

These tools are meant to help you... not do the work for you. So don't believe that all they do is take the thinking away from the coding. That's for WYSIWYG editors... and that's not what every editor besides Notepad is... so open your minds.

The color highlights are very helpful especially when you have embedded code, such as php with html or vise versa.

Does notepad have global search and replace?

In homesite you can have hundreds of pages open and one search and replace will effect every single page open!

Using something other than notepad saves you time and you become that much more efficient.

I couldn't imagine editing 5000+ lines of code on notepad.

Using NotePad teaches you the core fundamentals of HTML coding and gives you greater self sufficiency; but once you've mastered those fundamentals, there is nothing wrong with moving on to a WYSIWYG software program. I don't think they are a good place to start though, if you are serious about website design.

I have yet to see a WYSIWYG editor that could create HTML pages as quickly as I can with a simple text editor, and I have certainly NEVER seen a WYSIWYG editor that could generate efficient and un-obfuscated HTML.
In other words, my HTML pages are smaller, faster, simpler, cleaner, and they take less time to design.

EditPlus is my preferred tool also for ASP. I used to use InterDev but only for the colors. After it started corrupting my files, I switched to EditPlus and it's the only thing I use now.
