Hewlett-Packard 315 Digital Camera $100 after rebate w/coupon

This is a good deal, but the Fuji FinePix 2600Z MSN Passport deal from pre-Christmas was easily much better.

HSN.com also *had* a FinePix 2300, which is very comparable to this one, for just a few bucks more straight-up, no rebate.

The price is good, but it's last year's model, so some buyers will be disappointed. It all depends on your needs; I'm balking due to the $50 rebate.

This post is to remind people that 98ME & WIN2000 & XP will not read CF cards > 32MB straight from the HP315 camera. You have to use a CF card reader. There is more information on HP's support site. This might be the reason some of the CF cards are not working for some people. They also have a firmware upgrade on the site, but it does not fix the above problem.

In a nutshell:

Digital zoom = pixelated junk = bad
Optical zoom = close up pics like a regular zoom camera lens = good

You can get this camera and a webcam for around $90
HP 315 (442639) -- + 179.98
VEO Stingray USB Digital/Video -- + 29.99
Net Conferencing Camera
(466442 )
HP Rebate - 50
Webcam Rebate -30
Staples $40 off 200 -40

All for a total of $89.97 plus tax

My order showed no $50 rebate for the HP 315 at Staples.com. Same with the HP site. The Scandisk CF showed the $20, but nothing on the camera. Am I missing something? (Besides a few brain cells)
EDIT Hah, found it. I had to go through the specials page instead of the regular routine. Sorry for the bandwidth waste.

Techdreamer, thanks for the headsup on the read limitations. Though the support site seems explicit about it, does it apply to ALL CF cards above 32 Mb or just some brands?

Optical is real like in a regular camera. You actually get more detail for a more limited area of view. Digital is just interpolation from the pixels you'd normally get.

<< Whats the difference between optical and digital zoom?? >>

I ordered one but canceled it. I realized that I did not need yet another digital camera just because it was a good deal.

Anyway, it is indeed a very good deal.

The cons of this camera are that it only has 2.5x digital zoom with no Optical zoom. Also, the camera itself is very bulky.

442639 - Hewlett-Packard 315 Digital Camera $179.98
471057 - PNY CompactFlash USB Card Reader $ 19.98
xxxxxx - Some Staple Remover $ 0.69
-------------------------------------------------------
SUB-TOTAL $200.65
AFTER $40 off $200 COUPON $160.65
-------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL (w/ tax) ~$170.00

NOTE: I ordered over the phone because of the out-of-stock message online (but got 5-day delayed shipping). The CSR I spoke was very nice, so she informed me that there's a VERY GOOD CHANCE that the rebate will be denied because it was used along with a coupon. She said Staples Corporate got some note about this. So, be careful, because the rebate might not be approved!

If you have concrete confirmation on this (my CSR said "might"), please post it. Thanks for the hot deal (if it comes through)! 😀

Basically, Staples is losing money so they are trying to dissuade "cheap" customers from using coupons. This is just a step further from their ongoing policy of threatening web sites that list Staples coupon codes. There used to be many, how there are but a few such sites.

The real solution is if they only created unique coupons, or stopped issuing coupons, but in typical Dilbert corporate fashion, that would be too easy and sensible.

So instead Staples corporate has apparently been telling its CSRs to warn customers that Staples coupons will affect *manufacturer's* rebates. And that's the rub, usually manufacturers don't really care about the exact details of the transaction, as long as you meet the stated requirements.

The only case where some manufacturers care is that sometimes, they'll refuse a rebate if the customer paid less than the rebate amount.

Right now, the answer is we don't know exactly what will happen until two months later when the rebate clears processing. If I were a betting man, I'd say the manufacturers (particularly HP) are likely to honor their rebate commitments. Now if it's not a manufacturer rebate offer, then it might be a different story.

Hmm... if you're right, then I'm going to be heading down to my local Staples for a refund after the camera arrives. The rebate is not an HP rebate, I don't think.

It just doesn't seem like the fine print talks about coupons, unless coupons are considered promotions. But I think of a promotion as "for a limited time, orders over $500 get free shipping" -- something that's automatically applied. But a coupon is like a bringing a clipping into the store. Many other coupons have their fine print explicitly forbidding multiple coupon use. I think this rebate's interpretation is up in the air.
