I envision a lock on this thread soon.

Google is your friend.

Sexual contact of any kind mainly.

What did you do? :Q

You need to have contact with someone who has open sores I believe... but you might be able to pick it up from someone who doesnt show symptoms.... you can get it through sex, oral sex, or even just kissing....

I heard this from a dermatologist I think, don't know how true it is... but if you have exposed yourself to it and can get yourself to a hospital/doctor within 24 hours there is someway to kill it before it infects you.... I am not sure how true this is, but I swore a dermatologist told me that.....

Thanks for unlocking this Mods :D

One of the best ways to prevent herpes is to know who your partner is.... for more questions you might wanna ask Mrs. Skoorb as she is a nurse and probably could tell you some things about the disease....

and if in doubt, stop having sex and get your butt to a doctor

Not true, latex will protect you from the virus, although the "natural" skin is too porous to do so.

Most forms of Herpes are not curable.
Actually, none of them are curable AFAIK. The virus is pretty much with you forever once you contract it; the variation comes with how or if it expresses. You could have sores and such, but a lot of people who have it are asymptomatic.....part of the reason it spreads like it does.

For the record, it is spread via contact with mucous membranes, an open wound, or other blood/blood contact.

EDIT- I would of course be remiss in not linking the CDC data page on herpes. Here.

Last time I checked they weren't making condoms that covered your entired abdomen.

Herepes comes from the surrounding area like the labia, inner thigh, abdomen. Not the inside of the vagina. Liberal propaganda teaching children and adults that stds are prevented by condoms. :(

"Liberal propaganda", my ass. More like bible-beater propaganda trying to scare people into not having sex. The virus needs to come in contact with a mucous membrane or some other kind of break in your skin in order to infect you. I don't know about you, but I don't have mucous membrane on my inner thigh or abdomen. The only mucous membrane guys have down there is the urethra......which would be nicely covered with latex. Take your obvious ignorance elsewhere please.

That's what I had told my doctor when I went to him thinking I had a cold sore (turned out to be foliculitis (sp?)). He said if it were a cold sore, if I touched it then touched my forehead, I'd have herpes on my forehead.

I don't go to this doctor anymore.

Sex with multiple partners IS dangerous. Has nothing to do with religion.

You are misinformed about what you're talking about. My dad has genital herpes on his lower chin. Last time I checked he didn't have a mucous membrane on his lower chin. And you think the fluid from a herpes blister can't get transfered to the base of the penis from over the lip of the condom?

Are you telling me that circumsized males can't get herpes? They don't have any mucuous membranes left on their penis.

Herpes Pic 1 - non-mucous membrane

Herpes Pic 2 - non-mucous membrane

Because of the sex itself, or simply walking with your legs brushing against each other, you will have un-noticeable breaks in the skin in the leg area. Herpes is spreadable just before an outbreak occurs. Doesn't have to be any broken blisters.

Well, here's a scary thought for some of you.

My oldest child got Herpes Type 1 (Oral) just from when we spent a year living with my in-laws. She was 5 years old and started getting the most fierce cold sores/fevers you can imagine. Before then, there was no history of cold sores in my family but there is a history of it with my in-laws. I didn't realize what sort of risk I was putting my child at when we moved in. I was such an idiot.

She would get stressed out and a cold sore would erupt on her tonsils. She would get frighteningly sick... fevers of nearly 105. Finally, we had her tonsils removed... but the doctor said the herpes would just find another nerve path. It did. Now when she is stressed out, she gets the infection in her gastrointestinal tract and can't eat for days. Her immune system is crippled by it, and she's going to have to work hard to stay healthy for the rest of her life.

Herpes Type 1 CAN be spread through sex. I haven't told my daughter this yet, but eventually we are going to have to discuss it. She could give it to her future husband one day if she doesn't understand exactly what it is and how it is spread.

Of course, this is yet another reason why I can barely contain my pain and agony regarding my husband's family. But that's why I'm in therapy.

Herpes Is For Everyone!

As long as it is not genital herpes is no big deal.
30% of all people carry the oral virus without even knowing it.

Have a cold beer.

:D Well I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack - I don't remember which # is each. I was going to say that he doesn't know what he's talking about, but he DOES know what he's talking about, but for some reason he's still defending safe sex. Fausto correctly pointed out that herpes can be spread to areas of broken skin but then he implies that you can't get it in your inner thigh. I just wanted to point it out that you can.

?If you did universal vaccination of 11 and 12-year-old women, you would eventually see an impact on the spread of herpes in both men and women,? he said.

What's wrong with defending safe sex? And what's with the whole "liberal propaganda" thing? You make it sound like some kind of conspiracy or something. You're correct that you can have microtears in your skin here and there via abrasion (or probably shaving in your dad's case) and transmission can occur since virii are so incredibly tiny. This doesn't mean we all need to hide in a bunker wrapped in saran for the rest of our lives. STD's are not going away, but then neither is sex so the only middle ground is to take reasonable precaution (condoms) and move on. I mean, it's entirely possible you'll die in an auto accident on your way home today as well no matter how careful a driver you are. There has to be a reasonable cutoff point in how much padding we put between ourselves and the world and I just happen to think that total abstinence is overkill. There were almost 100,000 deaths attributed to accidents (slightly over 40,000 by cars alone) in the US in 2000, vs. approximately 20,000 attributed to AIDS/HIV. Is it liberal propaganda urging us to drive our cars and kill each other in huge numbers? :Q

It must react with hormones. Either Testosterone cancels it or Estrogen/Progesterone is a catalyst.

I read years ago that the gelcap coating they use for pills was found to kill the herpes virus when it came in contact. Researchers were intriqued because the gelcap material is supposed to be inert... I wonder if that's the base for the vaccine?
