I always thought the whole focus on how President Bush pronounced "nuclear" was a bit silly. But avoiding that kind of thing shouldn't prevent us from seriously questioning when someone really can't even respond to important issues at all. At least not if they want us to vote for them for President of the United States.
Yes pretty much this. And I agree with the distinction being drawn here with Bush and the mispronunciation of "nuclear" or with various "mispeaking" gaffs. Totally different things.
I would add that the problem I have with this sort of thing, and the Perry gaff, and the various Sarah Palin issues, which are all of a piece, is not necessarily with the raw intelligence of the candidate. It's a lack of interest in/engagement with the issues. While learning all this stuff doesn't necessarily prove that you give a damn, not learning it strongly suggests that you don't. I have a real problem with that when we're talking about someone running for national office, especially POTUS. It suggests to me that the real interest is in power/celebrity, not public service.
