I hate the way our society tips! Think about it, people always argue about "10% is the accepted tip amount," and "No, 15% is the accepted tip amount."

HELLO?!?! WTF!? THERE SHOULD BE _NO_ ACCEPTED AMOUNT!

The word "tip" denotes that the payment is a bit extra cause they did you a good service. Note: this does not mean that any body who does you any service deserves a tip! The damn delivery guy (of a home grocery service) is already being paid to do his damn job! Is he going out of his way to deliver your groceries? NO! He is doing what he must to get paid BY HIS COMPANY and not get fired. If he brings you some free food, or puts it in the fridge for you, or stops for a moment to pet the dog, then maybe you should give him a tip.

Why do we accept this notion of mandatory tipping? It should be on a case-by-case basis and not accross the board. One approach I have tried is what I call the "3-point scale." If I go to a restuarant I pay attention to the performance of my server. If they do something that makes me think, "well, that sure was nice/thoughtful/cool of them" then I give them 1 point. At the end of the meal I total up how many points they have and each point corresponds to $1. (I only call it the 3-point system cause I've never had the chance to give any body more than 3 points... pretty sad when you think about it.)

The other interesting thought is that people used to tip 5%. Then people decided that 10% was more proper. Now the "standard" is 15-20%. Next thing you know it will be 25%! One person tried to tell me that this was because of inflation. This makes no sense at all. Inflation would make the cost of the food/service itself rise, thus a set percentage of that cost would rise along with it... but not the actuall percent figure... know what I mean? --> 10% of $100 is $10, but 10% of $150 is $15. The percentage doesn't need to change and they still get a bigger tip in raw dollar amount.

Finally, i just want to shutup all the people frothing at the mouth who want to tell me that "tips are figured into a waiter's salary, so we have to tip or else they don't get their full pay." This is f-cking stupid-ass logic! So, you're saying that when the restuarant decides to pay waiters less and depend on tips to get by, we should allow this to "force" us to pay tips. NO! Give a tip as a tip, not a another part of the bill you must pay if you don't feel you got "above-average" service!

Finally, the best argument I have found to support not tipping all the time is this: If you take all the tips that people don't deserve, that you would have formerly given to them anyway, and give them to youself, think about how much money you'd save every year! Make yourself a tip jar that you put money in every time you get bad service.

Following my advice will make you very unpopular. The waiters wont say anything to you, so don't worry about them. However, your friends and family will try to crucify you. They will insult you, call you stingy, rude, cheap. Then they'll try to argue with you about the philosopy of the whole thing. Stick to the above defences of my plan and you will succed! Be brave and begin the 3-point scale!

uh... no thanks, i dont like to eat spittle... and anyway, have you ever worked as a waiter or delivery boy? they have to deal with assholes like you all the time...

Though, on the other hand, the more you tip and frequent an establishment, and the wait staff gets to know you, they will be more motivated to work.

But that brings us back to your original arguement about how they are already paid to do their job....

/me thinks about the $3 tip he left at a chinese restarant for a $23 check ... shoulda made it $1.50.....

I was totally blown away once when on the credit card draft paper where you sign, it had some extra writing right next to the tip line....it said 15% = $$, 20% = $$ ...
Talk about a "hint"......
 
the only thing i dont like about tipping is that it is 15%. if its not $100, the tip takes more than a second to calculate. if it were 10%, that would be easy. but i guess here in cali, for a quick way to calculate tip is to basically double the amount you were charged for tax since tax here is 7.75%

My g/f works in the food industry, and personally, I think you are an asshat.

I get free coffee at a few establishments around town because prior to that, I was known (and still am, when ordering food) as a good tipper. Works for me.

Sales tax varies by county in CA.

my friend who is a bartender at a restaurant tips outrageous amounts... he says when you work in the service industry (which i never have and probably never will) you'd understand.

tis true; doesn't even have to be in teh food service industry, just a person working for tips

i usually do about 18-22, more if it's some insanely good service


but then again, i'm really picky at a restaurant
 
Oh come on!

My main point is this: Tips are not tips anymore, they're mandatory extra payments. It should not be the case that any waiter or bus boy expects to get a tip every time! You guys are playing into the accepted paradigm of forced-tipping.

Here's 2 directions society could take:
1. Call tips by what they really are. Let's start saying that "I gave the waiter a 15% madatory meal taxation."
or...
2. Accept the fact that the word "tip" doesn't mean you give it all the time for any quality of service. The word "gratuity" is defined as a "favor or gift." Do you want to give your waiter a gift for every damn meal you eat, even when they mess up your order, seat you slowly and their establishment is dirty? No. If you go into a place and it is spotless, the waiters are extra-friendly, they get your order correct and go out of their way in general to provide you a quality service, then tip away! (using the 3-point scale of course!).

Still find it so absurd?

I happen to enjoy tipping, there's a certain amount of glee involved in leaving someone a $20 for a $20 meal.

The way I see it is a $20 tip would likely make my night if I were working that job.

I don't eat often at places where tipping would be appropriate, but when I do I make a habit of leaving a decent tip.

I don't believe there should be a MANDATORY tip. However, I do believe we should tip as it will increase their incentives to keep your food clean, faster, and tastier. A nice host/waiter is always appreciated and if so, they would recieve a nice big fat tip from me. If they are rude and forgetful, I would tip far less. But a MANDATORY tip for those large groups I don't like.
