Good grief, folks, the South has had plenty of nice things... I just don't think we should pretend that the Confederate flag can be separated from the racism it was built to represent.

Not really. I can't think of a goddamn thing the South has given us of a very notable nature besides slavery, sweet tea, and disneyworld.

That is because you are uninformed.

1) Georgia was the first colony to cultivate grapes in 1735.

2) The first silk from the colonies was sent from Savannah to Britain. It was made into a dress for the queen.

3) Georgia was the first state to charter a university, which is named the University of Georgia.

4) The first cotton gin was invented near Savannah by Eli Whitney and put into operation near Washington, Georgia.

5) Wesleyan College in Macon was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women.

6) In 1905, the Georgia Supreme Court was the first in the nation to recognize a constitutional right to privacy.

7) South Carolina the first Submarine.

8) South Carolina First patented antibody labeling agent.

9) South Carolina Charles Towne invented the MASER ( microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation).

10) South Carolina Wind Turbines invented by Gerald Barber.

That is only a very little of the souths contributions to the US.

Not a yankee and I understand slavery (and American history) just fine.

OK, I don't know where you are from. Please enlighten us.

I also disagree with your American History knowledge if you think the Southern States have not made any contributions or have nothing to be proud of.

Slavery has nothing to do with Southern Pride.
I don't understand why you yankees always have to bring this into the conversation.
As I stated above there is no way to explain it to a yankee. You wouldn't understand even if I tried.
Simply asked, what is it? You were a traitorous subset of the united states, the confederate flag is partially a symbol of that, it's on several documents that slavery was a large part of the reason the south went to war, so I ask, what is this heritage you are so proud of?

The invention that allowed slavery to continue that's a great one!

That is entirely unfair.

(music is my world so this is huge to me)
Musically speaking the south has given us
Sun Studios
Muscle Shoals Studios
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Buddy Holly
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jimmie Vaughan
Johnny & Edgar Winter
REM
Alabama Shakes
The Derek Trucks Band
The Allman Brothers Band
Glen Campbell
Elvis Presley
Howlin' Wolf
Johnny Lee Hooker

Actually the list of the artists the south has given us, is beyond extensive
Their food is amazing, Bar-be-que... From Tejas to North Carolina.. YUM E

Now if they'd just own up to the fact that the confederate flag is a racist symbol, the war is long over, they lost, time to move into the 21st century, ideologically speaking, it would help.

If you really don't think the South has contributed anything other than sweet tea and disneyworld, you're an absolute moron. The list of impactful things, people, inventions that come from the South is quite extensive.

That is entirely unfair.

Not to mention Rock And Roll itself coming from the South as well as the blues and a lot of jazz.

Now if they'd just own up to the fact that the confederate flag is a racist symbol, the war is long over, they lost, time to move into the 21st century, ideologically speaking, it would help.

I don't know anyone from the south who doesn't think the war is long over or that the South didn't lose it, and I lived in the south for years. The confederate flag is actually a mix. For many it's a symbol of southern pride without racist intent (in fact while living in Texas I had black friends who proudly flew the confederate flag), but overall it's become inextricably tied to racism and hatred.

Is that what I stated/claimed? Why no, it isn't. Thanks for playing though. Do play again.

Man these politicians and the media love to pull at people's emotions. I guess they don't want the poor little Democratic voters to feel totally hopeless.

You've been thrown a bone. That is all.

Wow, what a dumb comment.
This is the normal way of thinking now (or maybe since forever).

I guess people's characters are only measured in what material thing they can produce.

By the way, regional differences are only seen in the superficial ways. Deep inside, humans are far more alike than we would like to believe. Only on the surfaces can most people see differences. They cannot dig deeper.

You know what any pride relating to heritage is? Idiotic. Also frequently desperate.

Things you can be proud of:
Your accomplishments.

End of list.

Oh bull crap.

Obviously you have no idea how much labor was saved by the introduction of the cotton gin.

You have been brainwashed into thinking only about "slavery". That is my entire point why it makes very little sense to waste my time attempting to explain it to you simpletons. All you want is to bring every good point back around to "slavery". Like the insults from the Sheik above. No one is defending slavery and he has to put in his little insult the same as you. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

First you give me a load of crap about Southern Pride of our Heritage.

Then you agree ( at least partially ) that the South has made extensive contributions to the nation. You are confusing. I guess you "assumed" I was defending slavery, which I was not. I was only pointing out that the south has a lot to be proud of.

Alright some black people in the south that you never wanted there if they weren't working the fields gave us the roots for some goddamn good music. I'll give you that. And a few interesting inventions. Nothing like electricity, sound recording, light bulbs, motion pictures or the goddamn phone or anything, but we can add that to the list. The biggest pork producing states these days are in the midwest. Besides Texas, the same about beef.

You guys forgot the only other major thing I can think of that came out of the South. The Wright Brothers, though that claim is contested.

That's OK, i actually dropped a $20.00 in a Salvation Army kettle and told the guy "this is for werepossum" I'm sure he didn't understand, but he said "thanks and Merry Christmas? anyways.
lol You're a good man.

What does the south have to be proud of?
Well, ending the threat of President Hildabeast springs to mind . . .

Good grief, folks, the South has had plenty of nice things... I just don't think we should pretend that the Confederate flag can be separated from the racism it was built to represent.
Agreed, on both counts.

I actually had a Confederate battle flag license tag for several months, when I was sixteen. I was independently reading history at the time, and when I got up to the civil war it made me think about southern pride. I decided at that point that no symbol from that war or rebellion should ever be a symbol of anyone's pride, so I threw it away. Interestingly, some of my black friends also had them. None of us had really thought it out. At the time though, it was by far our best selling license tag. Although the Canadian Maple Leaf tag gave it a good run for its money when we got in three accidentally. Seems people thought it was a big red pot leaf . . .

What if your accomplishments are an extension of and attributed to your heritage?

More short slighted views and ignorance. Start to finish of your post. Where do you think that nuclear bombs were developed and made that stopped WWII? Manhattan Project, perhaps you've heard of it. Somewhere in east Tennessee. But you're right, not nearly as complicated as motion pictures.
