BTW: In all seriousness i would try to get to that vent and maybe put some foam in front of it with slits so the vent still works. My gramps had the same thing happen and the only thing you can do is cover up holes with cauke, get a bird net or use some foam.

Woodpeckers are protected animals but F that, just sit and Wait like Chuck Norris with a bb gun and pow!!!!!

Woodpeckers are great. I'm definately not a treehugger, greenie, or PETA supporter but to kill woodpeckers because they mistakenly tap on your metal vent is stupid and irresponsible.
 
I've got one that does that on the metal furnace chimney. Just heard it yesterday for the first time this year. I saw it once - appeared to be a northern flicker.
 
But what if it was the only way to stay sane.

I stayed at my gramps one day and this thing went on for hours. Drove me insane.

If I had to weight my options if this happened to me

I think some of the pecking is done to attract mates, not just look for bugs. I think they do this because hammering on a metal vent is much louder then hammering on a tree. Gives them a better chance of getting laid 😛
