HERE THE PII IS AT NEWEGG!!!!

PII

So there you guys go. For all of you that didn't believe me I LOL@U. So what are you waiting for go buy it!!!

On another note this is only $275 for the 940 a lot cheaper then what I was told by AMD so Intel I will assume will lower prices because the upgrade to a Phenom II is much easier than a upgrade to the new i7(unless you have lots of money)

Maybe I don't know enough about these things, but $275 for that when I can get a E7300 Wolfdale for $119 just doesn't make sense. I have been thinking my next build was to be Intel and this doesn't change anything.

Yeah because the Phenom II a Quad core was made to compete with the lowest end E7300 Dual Core.

Nice Apples to Apples comparison.

Some of those Combo deals look mighty tempting.

For those of you looking for benchmarks, the Anandtech Review seems to show it being ~ equal in performance to the Q9400.

I'm not sure which way I will go now. It has the advantage of an IMC, but slightly lower performance than the Q9550; I think I will wait until the summer and see if there are any higher clocked AM3 parts, or a mainstream i5 competitor that would work better for my wants.

Everyone is hopeful, but from Anandtech's review it just shows it matching the previous gen Intel quads and falling considerably short of the i7s. They needed a home run instead of a base hit (in a game they are already behind in). Its a shame - every CPU I've used since 2003 (a total of four) have been AMD. Looks like an i7 for my next build (unless other reviews show something different). The Empire won Luke. 😉

Those who were expecting PhII to match i7 were... foolish. There had been no indication from forecasts, previews or leaked info that PhII would be anything more than an evolution of Phenom.

PhII is exactly what most people (those paying attention, anyway) expected it to be.

Seriously - it's the fastest CPU from AMD to date, and has the luxury of being a drop-in replacement for existing platform users. If you're putting together a brand new system, then you're better off served with probably an i7 if you want to spend the money. If don't care much about money and want to have the fastest system of all, highest-end C2Q or i7 (latter only waiting for higher end parts in the meantime). If you already have an AM2+ platform built and want a faster CPU (like myself, I still run an X2 3800+), then this is by far the most economical way to get some great gains.

Anand: "PII Still slower clock for clock than C2Q"

😕

good thing they run 300-500 mhz faster then its priced competition like the q9300 @ 2.5ghz for $249

clock for clock hasn't really been valid since what??? p3 vs athlon.. IMHO

Its def nice to see what the IPC is for each at the same clock, but since they don't run at the same clock its kinda moot.

why?

the PHII doesnt even touch i7.

if the PHII fell in the same niche as the i7, then yes possibly, but it doesnt.

So i highly doubt intel will drop the price on the crown parts of the computer world.

:T

Basically intels approach is, cant afford an i7? get an i5.

Yeah, but back then it was AMD winning the work/cycle war (so more work from a slower-clocked processor) while Intel charged ahead toward the 4GHz mark. These days AMD has the hot-running chip (PII at 125W versus C2Q at 95W [and soon to be 65W]) that must be clocked higher to keep up in performance.

Ah, progress...

if it matters to anyone ive seen benchmarks for this processor.

@ 3.6 if you care about drystone and whitstone, its a little short of yorkfield.

But idle voltages pull it near a E5500 class. this is WOW for a quadcore.

And load is also nice.

my friends tell me it clocks very nicely to 3.6-4.0 with an excellent board, at fairly good voltages.

im hearing around 1.35-1.45.

so its a good solution for those who just want a slight bump.

yes! the wait is over. i think this is a great deal. i built 2 Q6600 systems last yr so i've been waiting to give AMD some business this yr. . . . i7 is great and all, but a little pricey. i got 4G (cas 4) RAM for $49. the ASUS SB750 AM2+ motherboard was only $180 and it can hold up to 4 GPU's for Folding@Home. . . .i'm glad AMD is moving in the right direction

As I recall it wasn't so much that folks didn't believe you but rather it was that folks took exception to a thread title/subject claiming availability when the reality was the sites were effectively taking pre-orders as their ship-dates were some 2-3 weeks out.

In any event rest assured your efforts to add value to this forum are appreciated, and working too!

Thanks for that not-so-subtle insinuation. I don't live, eat and breath every fragment of pre-release information about each company's upcoming CPUs. I usually wait until I can see some hard numbers from reviews (and hope for the best). You can pat yourself on the back for being one of "those paying attention" I suppose.

In my ignorance of such matters I suppose I can be allowed my disappointment with the Phenom II.

PHII looks impressive for gaming + overclocking... good match for C2D,C2Q, and i7...

Looking forward to seeing a PHII 945 AM3 review

The AM3 ones I believe will run at 95W and *might* be clocked alittle higher, but will they OC any higher??? Who knows.

I didn't think i needed a quad until i thought about value. My Q8200 is comparable to a PII at 3ghz. When i picked it up for $189 (came with a free mATX ECS motherboard that i use as a spare) really was a great value and an investment in the future. Its exactly like when i upgraded my Athlon 3500+ to a x2 4200+. The 3500+ was 2.2ghz and had 512k L2 cache, and the 4200+ is two 3500+'s on one die. Single threaded applications ran EXACTLY the same but multithreading was right around the corner. My s939 system still can hold its own in most multithreaded games, but this Q8200 just blows it out of the water and will last me a good 3-5 years for gaming and more than a decade for office work.

Now that is value.

Dang. I wonder how this OC's on my 780G Biostar TA780G M2+ or if it's even compatible.

Good to see AMD with a compelling chip.

I don't think you can go wrong with either a Penom II or an i7 or Core2Quad. It's the videocards that are going to make the biggest difference in gaming.
