Help - x2 Temp too high

Hi -

I swapped a Venice 3200 for a x2 3800. Same MB, RAM, hard drives, case etc. The only difference was the CPU and the HSF.

The Venice is using a Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu. The x2 is using the stock HSF that came in the box from AMD.

I could OC the Venice by 250 mhz, and the CPU temp under load (SETI@HOME running) would sit around 46-50 depending on the room temp.

The IDLE temp for the x2 is 56. Under load (1 instance of Prime95), the temp goes up to 64!

I thought the x2 was supposed to run cooler? This seems ridiculous.

Just tonight I removed the HSF from the x2, cleaned everything real well and applied a new layer of Arctic Silver. No change in temps.

Any ideas why it could be running so hot?

I'm using a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mb, with latest BIOS. Temps are as reported by the MSI Core Center running under Windows.

I'd like to use the Zalman on the x2, but since the warranty is voided if I don't use the stock HSF, I'm being cautious.

I would appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks!

That's so hard to believe... 56 idle is higher than I get at load and I'm really OC'ed.... perhaps your bios is misreporting ?? Are ambient temps high???

What bios version ? and have you checked core-center. I just had to change it, where was a setting for the fans that enabled cool and quiet, and the fan was running at 1500 and the temp was 60 idle (OC'ed to 1.5v and 2400). After disabling the fan speed, now it runs at 3100 rom, and the temps are 54c with both cores at 100%. I just put this 3800+ X2 system together tonight, and it won't OC as good as my 4400+, but for almost half the price, I have a decent OC still. And this is a less than one hour OC, I am sure I might do better later.

What the hell is wrong with you?? Where did you hear that an X2 with 2 of your Venice cores (actually called manchester) would be cooler??? That is not very smart....Ofcourse it is not cooler it should be warmer...

That aside the stock heatsink should do much better then that...I would expect low 30's for idle and load upper 40's....

Some mobos have problems correctly identifying the X2 vcore...You may be giving it too much vcore and is some of the issue...Otherwise 56c says incorrect hsf placement or BS numbers...

I don't think it's the BIOS. I was using the same BIOS version with the Venice, and it was reporting the more realistic temps. Actual temp in the room right now is 25.6c (78.1f), and the external LCD on my case is reporting an internal temp of 33c.

would you tell me what your fan speed is right now ? see my post above.

That doesn''t mean crap...The venice bios with the Neo2 wont even run an X2 correctly and wanted to set my vcore waaayy off....

The fan speed was a good call. I already had C&Q turned off in Core Center, but found a setting in the BIOS for Smart CPU Fan. The temperature threshold was set at 60c, and my cpu fan was running at 1200 rpm.

I disabled that function, and now the cpu fan is running at 3375 rpm. Idle temp on the CPU is now 48c.

Thanks for the suggestion! It's still higher than I'd like, but at least I gained a few degrees with that small change.

My guess is that you have the kind of sensor accuracy luck i have had with my Neo2.

My temps supposedly hit 65C under load...as if

Neo2 temp sensors = teh crap

VCore as reported in the BIOS (not Windows) is 1.24v. Are you suggesting it should be something different? When I run CPU-Z, it shows my revision as JH-E6.

When I did the CPU swap I did a complete reset back to factory defaults in the BIOS, and started from there.

BIOS version 1.90 has had no problem recognizing my x2 3800.

I see they have a 1.A0 version out. Anyone used it yet?

Notes from MSI on this BIOS are:
1. This is Award BIOS release.
2. This BIOS fixes the following problem of the previous version:
- Update CPU ID for AMD E6 CPU.
3. 2005/08/16

I'd recommend trying it, since they seem to have added more support for the E6s.

Here's the current status:
After disabling C&Q in CoreCenter and in the BIOS, my idle temp is hovering around 48c. Full load is at 55c.

Full load is 2 sessions of Prime95, with processor affinity locking each instance to one core.

Thanks for all the help, it seems that I'm making progress!

My original BIOS on my DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR recogmized my Venice 3000+, but it was only after I upgraded the BIOS that it really ran great. My advice is to update your BIOS.

Have you used another utility besides core center to check voltages and temps? I would corroborate them with speedfan or another third party utility. Also, 1.24v is pretty low for a 3800+ X2. Stock on that chip is 1.4v, though I doubt your software/BIOS is reporting it correctly.

Well sometiems you get bad chips. My x2 idles at 50 degrees and loads at 65 oced to 2.5. I'm not complaining though since its prime stable and thats all I care about. 38/50 stock (2.2 ghz).

I'm at 51c on the stock hsf at 2.4, and I haven;t spent more than 20 minutes on it.
