help with rc5 / distributed computing

helo all,
well, i'm kinda new to distributed computing -- heard quite a bit of them but started to really jump in just yesterday 🙂

anyways, i'm doing rc5 now, and i'm using the pre-configured rc5 client for TA Cube. as you all know, we newbies come up with lots of questions, but sometimes are too lazy to look at the faqs 😉 (no actually, i DID read the faqs but it's still confusing for me). I've asked quite a few questions to dennilfloss, but i thought i might as well ask larger audience rather than bugging him all the time (of course, i'll keep bugging him again from time to time 😉 ). so here are my questions:

first, there's a notice (or warning or reminder or faqs) that i have to setup my client from a root directory of a floppy. well, d/l the client, unzip it to my c:\temp directory, and set it up from there, and it seems like it's running ok. will this do any harm, or will it not update/contribute to Team Anandtech, it will format my hard drive, or ....?? and what's the difference from setting it up from a floppy?

secondly, if at some point i'm going to uninstall the client, what else do i need to do other than removing c:\rc5 ? i remembered reading somewhere that the client saves something to my windows registry, but i can't recall or dunno where exactly it's located at.

thirdly, if i'm so dumb as to download the 24/7 client, while i'm using a modem, will it be harmful? what about the vice versa? (no, no, i'm not that dumb ... yet 😉 )

fourthly, if i put my computer to sleep (put it in standby mode, not drowning it in the pool 🙂 ), will the client still run and do computations? (i'm assuming it won't, since standby mode will kill all processes)

and finally, i'm assuming TA Cube stands for Team Anandtech "Cube". so what's the "cube" for? 😕

thanks all, and rest assured i'll come back bugging you all again 😉

p/s: pardon for the messy writings, grammars, and mistakes on the terms and groups and all 🙂

Hope this will answer at least some of these questions:

1. You don't have to set up the client from a floppy. I have mine set up using an NT Login script. The disk just makes it easier. You could manually copy the files to whatever directory you want and then start the client. The setup is a batch file that does basically that.

2. You can just remove the rc5 directory unless you have used the dnetc -install option to install it as a client and it is running hidden. Otherwise, just shut it down and delete it. It would be nice if you cracked and flushed all of your blocks that you have in the buff-in before you delete them. That way they aren't "lost"

3. The main difference between the modem and the 24/7 client is the number of blocks buffered. The 24/7 only buffers 500 (by default) since it can, theoretically, get more at any time. The dial up buffers 2000 so it can crack longer while not dialed up and not run out of blocks.

4. Unless you have installed as a service, any time you log out, go to sleep, etc. the client will stop. There are also options set to stop when a laptop is running on battery power.

5. TA Cube is a miniteam based on the Borg from Star Trek. Hence the Cube. Also commonly refered to as the Borg or the Collective. You may notice that many of us use the good old Borg icon. 🙂 TA is in fact for Team Anandtech, which is ultimately more important than any miniteam or individual.

Hope that answers your questions, and if I have made any mistakes and am corrected be a team member, I will edit my post and deny any of the mistakes. 😉

Welcome to TA Cube and Team Anandtech. 😀

thank for the response and answers. they're really helpful!

and now, for more questions: 🙂
1. on this statistic page, some are listed with the name, computer name, or ip address. is there a configuration or anything that will let me specify something fancy like "stndn" or "whatever else" instead of ipt*.aol.com?

2. this actually come from my friend when i tried to "assimilate" him 😉. he asked me "how do you know if the client you're downloading/using is doing the thing that they claim it will do?". ie: how do i know i'll be proofing 64-bit encryption and not helping break a bank account or some password? and esp i'm using a "customized" client, how can i know what it will really do?

i think i need to start watching more star trek ... 😱
and i have a strong feeling i'll come back bugging you all even more 🙂

thanks for all the help and information!!!

The names are the ip address or hostname of the computer cracking, or the individual if One has set it up that way. Mine is actually a collection of computers on a few different host names the Russ (One) has consolidated under my name. There are others like that. Tamade&seed, cpars, etc. Email Russ and let him know that you want your stuff consolidated, I am sure he will find it in has heart, however cold it might be, to do that for you. 🙂

The other part, well, hmmmm. I guess you could to dnet and read their stuff. There is a lot of info on their site. You could download their client and use the address rc5@tacube.com and still crack for the Borg. I guess I don't have a good answer to that one. Maybe someone else will.

🙂
