Help with quitting smoking

Hey everybody

I have a good friend who would like to quit smoking but hasn't been able to yet. I would like to ask smokers who have successfully quit to post their stories and maybe some tips that helped you that could help my friend out.

Thanks in advance 🙂

First time I quit I used the patch which worked well. Second time I used Chantix which also worked well. The main thing is that he really needs to want to quit, if he doesn't then he wont be successful no matter what he's taking to help.

Quit. Stop smoking. Try a significant day to begin - Birthday, christmas, july4, new years day. (You can easily remember your time as a non-smoker)

I cold-turkey quit a better than a pack a day habit in '99 and have not had one since. No patch, no gum, nothing. Three pieces of advice I can offer:

1) Make sure the quitter REALLY wants to quit. If they're not 100% committed and only kinda sorta want to quit they're just wasting time.

2) You need to change your habits. Avoid the places and activities where you smoke the most. For me I quit going to bars and playing cards for a month because I smoked like a chimney whenever I was drinking or playing cards. I always wanted a smoke after dinner, so I worked out instead. I wanted a smoke during my coffee breaks, so I quit coffee breaks for a while. Keep your mind and body otherwise occupied and you won't notice the cravings.

3) Keep away from people that smoke. It's too easy to bum one and if you bum even one you're cooked.

tell your friend to go out and get absolutely PLASTERED as hard as he can. smoke and drink your face off, and do whatever you need to do to get a 10-bell hangover. in the morning you should find it easier to refrain from smoking.

j/k but that has worked for me before, ie. the most recent time i quit.

it helps to set a quit date for some people, and for others cold turkey is too tough. you just need to develop the willpower to eliminate the habit. a good way to do this is to think of all the benefits to quitting. there really are VERY few reasons to smoke, and hundreds of reasons why you shouldn't.

i'm going on a month without smokes... i couldn't stand the thought of smoking outside in the freezing winter this year. g/l to your friend

I have read about Chantix causing some people to have suicidal thoughts. What do you guys think about/know about that? I certainly wouldn't want my friend taking it if there was any possibility of that.

like others have said i changed some behaviors after setting the date.
i stopped smoking marijuana, i stopped drinking beer.
i asked my smoker friends to help me.

it took a few months to finally get over the bad cravings.
you just have to want to quit and i personally don't feel drugs are necessary.

most people (a couple friends, my mom & dad, aunts & uncles) that have quit for good have quit cold turkey.

Number 1: Quit drinking for a few months or longer. Drinking will ALWAYS weaken your resolve and you will fall for...

Number 2: There is NEVER "just one" cigarette. If you want to quit, you cannot cheat or rationalize "just one," ever. You'll "just one" yourself right back to a pack a day.

Number 3: Avoid other smokers.

Number 4: Urges are surprisingly short lived, but intense. They usually only last 10 minutes or so. Take it one urge, one day at a time.

Number 5: Cold Turkey is the only way to do it. "Tapering off" very rarely works. "Cutting back" is the same. Only a tiny minority of people addicted to nicotine are able to moderate successfully. An addiction is, by definition, the inability to moderate.

i have to quit with cigarettes around me. not smoke while there's cigarettes available everywhere, in my car, inmy room, etc...

that's the only true way to quit.

Is your friend in Florida?

She can call the Florida quit line and get lots of support/help and free gum, lozenges, patches.
