Help with my new hard drive

Hi, I just got a new 120gb IDE hard drive. I now have 1 40 gig hard drive with my OS on it, the new 120 gig one, a cd-rom and a cd-rw. I have a normal motherboard with 2 IDE ports. How should I set up the master/slave configuration for maximum performance?

Thanks

i recommend putting the 40GB as master and the 120GB as slave on IDE 1
but if you use the 120GB to edit videos then i recommend putting the 120GB as master

i would put each hard drive as a master and each cd-rom drive as a slave...

40gig=primary master
120gig=secondary master
rom drives=either slave

that makes things better for copying cds and for copying files from one hd to the other.

but i thought if you put a ATA33 drive on a ATA100 channel the whole channel will revert back to ATA33?
and if i am correct, you will get a performance hit
correct me if i am wrong

bgeh is correct. You want to put the hard drives on their own channel (40GB master, 120GB slave is good) and the cd-roms on their own IDE channel.

Sorry bgeh Is not correct almost all modern IDE controllers support independant device timing.

Edit: Read this for more info on independant device timing.

The best config is:

Primary Master - HD (OS Drive)
Primary Slave - CDRW
Secondary Master - HD (Backups, archive, seldom used apps, swap file, etc....)
Secondary Slave - CDROM

Assuming the following usage patterns:

1) U will usually install from the CDROM to the Primary Master.
2) U will usually 'backup' CDs from the CDROM to the CDRW.
3) U will usually copy information from the primary HD to the secondary HD.
4) U will usually burn from the secondary HD to CDRW.

If you don't trust me I can link to a tonne of other threads........

Newer technology has correced that so i would depend on the Mobo in question...

NP bgeh... I have had a few clients who swore up and down that this is not true because they purchased a new ATA66/100/133 HD and hooked it up with the CD/CDRW on 1 newer MoBo with no improvement...so I go to their set up and look , then what do I find? ATA33 cables on both IDE ports 😉
