bgeh Is not correct almost all modern IDE controllers support independant device timing.

The best config is:
Primary Master - HD (OS Drive)
Primary Slave - CDRW
Secondary Master - HD (Backups, archive, seldom used apps, swap file, etc....)
Secondary Slave - CDROM
Assuming the following usage patterns:
1) U will usually install from the CDROM to the Primary Master.
2) U will usually 'backup' CDs from the CDROM to the CDRW.
3) U will usually copy information from the primary HD to the secondary HD.
4) U will usually burn from the secondary HD to CDRW.
