I posted this at networking, but no one answered yet... trying my luck here

Here is the issue:
I have a home wireless network set up with WEP enabled, I just use this for my laptop.
Since I set it up everything works perfect, but just now suddenly my laptop was not able to connect to my router, but my laptop actually finds my wireless router, with 2 other wireless routers (prolly neighbors).

so can it be that my wireless router is somewhat conflicting with the neighbor's router? or is it simply because I turned the laptop on for a whole day, and the wireleess card got too hot? (its an internal, dell 600m).

now my laptop is working fine again though albeit slower than before, and also sometimes I only get 1mbps (instead of the full 11mbps) while the signal strength is full

any ideas why this happened?

EDIT: ok just now, my wireless connection (on my laptop) just went off, and now its fine again... arghhhh should I use that intel proset thingie?

yep, if you running 802.11b, its a 2.4 GHz freq, which alot of phones are, which will interfere greatly.

Have you tried changing channels? I had the same problem, and tried a different channel... it seemed to work better after that.

I bring my laptop to school, so its kinda pain in the ass to keep changing channels when Im at school or at home

so neighbor's wirleess interfering is definetly a cause of this?

???

yes I use WEP on my wireless network, but my desktop is connected directly to my router, so no key is needed there.

yes, but if you used 64 or 128 bit encription you will have to make sure both your desktop and laptop have the same alpha-numeric key.

this should not be an issue, since my connection works perfectly before... (and I've been using the same key)

must be interference then. neighbor's wirleess, 2.4GHz cordless phone, i believe some of the direct tv units use that freq as well.

I have a 600m and I also had some wireless problems initially. There is lots of information regarding centrino wireless cards and various routers on the net if you google it. It's a pretty common problem. Here's how I solved mine:

I flashed my router to latest firmware. I have the linksys router, v4.

Go to dell's site and upgrade to the latest intel proset software.

go to your system services and disable windows zero config or some service that resembles that name I forget right now. basically this service tries to make windows in charge of your wireless, let intel take care of it.

some people also said in the intel software switch the power management to manual and turn to maximum performance, but I've kept mine on auto and had no problems once I did the above 3 things.

Oh and I use 128bit wep too.

yeah. i am using intel proset also and it is working fine for some time now. i did have to manually up my power to maximum though. have neighbors connections that conflict so i had to change channels also. your problem is not with wep or anything as stated above.
