Help with folder permissions in XP Home

One night, I decided to turn off my laptop. The next morning, I turned it on and got a BSOD. Apparently the night monsters decided to eat away at my registry and made it corrupt. Since I don't use windows restore, I was forced to reinstall. I could not format because I have files that arent backed up.

My problem is that I cannot access my old Files and settings. I tried going into the security tab in safe mode but it comes up with an error message "You do not have permission to view or edit current permission settings for folder. You can take ownership or change auditing settings."

I have no clue how to take ownership...or what auditing even is.

I believe it has to do with my security id?

Any insight would be helpful, thanks!

This does not work, I get that error message when i go to the securities tab and cannot modify owner settings

One extremely back door way of backing up those files is this; download a free operating system that will boot from a disk, like damnsmalllinux, and access the files that way, burning to dvd or saving to an external drive as you need.

This does work in some cases, my friend and I spent hours figuring it out, but the files were not restricted. They were just on a corrupted part of the hard drive.

Hope this works.... I know it seems wierd but it's all I can think of.

Here's a pic to help you visually: pic :camera:. Like RebateMonger said, you have to be in Safe Mode on WinXP Home Edition to get to this stuff.

Ahh i fixed it. I had to change owners by checking that box in mechBgon's screenshot. Thanks guys
