Hi,

I ran into a major problem with the washing machine brass standpipe in my house, it has a major corrosion problem and leaks. Previous owner must not have done laundry.

Anyway, what's the best way to go about installing a new p-trap? The elbow coming out of the wall seems good, no corrosion problems with it. It seems to maybe be soldered or just so stuck it won't come loose (60 yr-old house). It's all 1-1/2 pipe. I just tested and a plastic slip nut fits and tightens down onto it. Can I just find the appropriately-sized PVC p-trap and screw it on and call it good? The original standpipe is around 24" tall by the way.

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm not too good at plumbing so I don't want to do anything against code.

Yes there is a ring that spins on the U, threads on the elbow out of the wall.

I think the U piece off the wall is copper and the elbow out of the wall is brass (definitely not copper) and if so might have been some galvanic corrosion.

That looks like brass. Just hold the two pieces together and spin the ring back on. If that doesn't work you might use a rubber coupler.

Either way you should find a way to attach the top of the pipe to the wall for support. Probably the reason it came apart to begin with.

Edit: There's no reaction between brass and copper. The problem is copper and steel.

Actually I should have taken another picture of the long pipe, it's been corroded through so there's a long hole near the spinning ring, one of the pictures you can see it kind of as it shows light through it.

Looks good. Don't overlook my suggestion to attach the top to the wall for support.

Yeah I think you're right, there was too much stress on the J turn for 50 years. Do they sell a wall clamp or something? I could also get plastic plumbers strapping?
