Hello everyone,

I just spend like $700 to build a new computer to play doom3. However, it doesn't work well at all and I am really disappointed. Could someone look at my spec or tell me what I can do to improve the performance?

My system is
Athlon 64 2800+ with Zalman cooler
Antec 430w power supply
Chaintech vnf-250 motherboard
512mb PC2700 ram ( waiting for pc4000 one to come)
BFG 6800 OC
Maxtor 120GB ata133
on-board sound
asus 48x12x48 cd-rw
microsoft keyboard + razor mouse

running windows xp mostupdated, directx9.0c, nvidia 6117(most updated driver)

For doom 3 performance, I get acceptable performance at high quality 800*600
and ultra high quality is 1024*768 makes the game lags a lot
the worst if I can to scan the system to determine the system setting, it says 640*480
(v-sync off, aa off)

Please some one help me out here

Hi AtDoom3,

Dont worry about Doom3 picking 640x480 its just picking that because you only have a 128MB card.

Dont use Ultra High Quality settings with your card. There is very little difference between High and Ultra High. Except UltaHigh doesnt use any compression so needs a ton of video memory. Id recommends 512mb of video memory for this setting.

Try these settings:
-Go into your NV control panel and set your AA and AF to application preference.
-Then inside Doom3 under system set it to 1024x768 High Quality.
-Under the advanced options make sure the top 4 are set to yes. Set Vsync to NO. Then set AA to 2x.
-Then exit Doom3 and relaunch it so the new settings take affect.

After you do this run the timedemo built into the game. To do this.
-Hit Ctrl+Alt+Tilde This will bring down the console.
-Then type timedemo demo1 and hit enter. Let it play through and when its done it will give you the FPS. Dont be suprised at how choppy the benchmark runs. It always does this on the first run. Also the score you get on the first run is always low, so disregard this number. Just go ahead and repeat the above steps and run the benchmark again this time it will be a lot smoother and give you an accurate number.

To give you an idea with these exact settings I get around 65 FPS.

P.S. Congratulations on your new system.

You built a system for doom 3 but didnt do any research.

Ultra High Quality is designed for 512mb video cards and High Quality is for 256mb video cards.

Hi Sigma

first thank , seond i set it to what you said

1024x768 High Quality. top 4 are set to yes. Set Vsync to NO. Then set AA to 2x.

and i ran timedemo demo1

which yields me around 63 fps

is this normal performance?

right as rain. and it looks like stnicralisk didnt do HIS research, the 6800 standard can handle high quality. there is just a half sec lag when u enter a room. ur mem is ddr2700 (not pc2700), does that mean its running at the 333 fsb? isnt the 64's supposed to run at 400? u dont need pc4000 in that case, u need ddr3200.

Edit: Stuttering stops when u disable fastwrites. oh btw, more info for stnicralisk, a 6800NU can handle high quality @ 1600x1200! u just need an athlon FX, fastest memory timings and speed, an an nforce 3 250gb.

His memory IS PC2700, or DDR333.
Maybe he WANTS PC4000 to overclock with, despite only NEEDING PC3200.
PCxxxx, where the xxxx means the memoyr bandwidth in MB/s (eg: PC3200 is 3.2GB/s or 3200MB/s
DDRxxx, where the xxx refers to the speed (in MHz) the memory is rated for. (eg: 333MHz (or 166MHzx2))

Your score now seems OK. UHQ settings will cause lag because the system will have to use the system RAM to store textures and stuff, as it needs > 256MB VRAM.
This is where the slowdown comes in, as accessing system RAM involves latency and slower speeds.

running windows xp mostupdated

Does this include Service Pack 2? I heard service pack 2 is a performance killer. Also, did you install the NForce drivers from Nvidia for your motherboard?

SP2 is no slower or faster than previous versions. He should definitely make sure he has the latest chipset drivers though.

Going from 768MB of 333MHz DDR to 1GB 400MHz DDR (both name brand CAS 2.5) did nothing for me on my Doom3 performance, I have a A64 3000+.

The A64 runs fine with 333MHz RAM.

Hello all,

first thank you for all the replies

I just received my OCZ pc4000EL gold 512ram

I did some overclocking with my system

CPU to 2223mhz( 247mhz*9)
Ram to 411mhz(166mhz)
CPU voltage to 1.6v
HT to 3x

then I also overclocked my graphic card to 380mhz/759mhz

I got 70.7fps on Doom3 timedemo demo1 now at 1024*768 high quality , 2xaa, all options beside v-sync on

so happy now

ram is at 411mhz? DDR is DOUBLE data rate. Ram set to 205.5 would be 411mhz

Always best to TRY and match up your ram/cpu frequency but your OC seems to be pretty good anyhow
