help securing wireless network

i have d-link DI-624 and a d-link wireless card
i tried to do it myself and i couldnt get the computer on wireless to connect
d-link's support site is no help

the authentication options on the wireless card are open, shared, wpa, wpa-psk
router has none, wep, wpa, wpa-psk
so it'd have to be wpa or wpa-psk

i dont know how to set up wpa or wpa-psk....i tried router's wep with shared on the card (seem to be the same thing) and couldnt get it to connect

Setup WPA. I think you need a passphrase. Enter one. Then on the client connect to the network name (SSID) you setup, and put in the WPA passphrase you put in the router.

yes, it works fine without any authentication
is a paraphrase just any alpha-numeric phrase?

Certainly use WPA however a WEP mismatch or misconfiguation will not stop your client card from associating to the AP. You'll associate and send data, just not receive any.
