MY PC died and a need to order new components in a hurry. Short story is it wouldn't boot I pulled all the components but the motherboard and PS and still nothing ( no CPU fan, zippy). I disconnected the PS and jumped it out to get it going and the PS tested out OK(not under load anyway). So I am pretty sure the Motherboard is dead.

So I need to get a PC up and running quick and I might as well upgrade a few things while I am at it. I uses it typically to encode some video, play a few games HL2, CS:Source, nothing much newer than that(yet anyway).

Here is what I have:
Antec P160 Case (2x 120mm Fans)
Antec NeoPower 480 Watt
DFI LanParty nf4 Ultra-D (Dead)
AMD 64 3700+
MSI 7800 GT 256 MB
1-GB(2x512) OCZ Rev 2 Platinum
1-160GB WD Caviar SE SATA3.0 HDD
1-320GB Seagate 7200.10 HDD
NEC 3540A CD/DVD Burner

I am thinking about a new Mobo, CPU, and RAM. Possibly reusing the PS, GPU, and hard drives, etc.

Here is what I had in mind, prices from Newegg (any advice or changes would be appreciated)
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 $189
Ram - G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2 1000 RAM $109
Mobo - GA-P35-DS3L $89

Couple questions I had. I built this PC a couple years ago and bought an OEM copy of XP Pro. Will I be able to reuse it or will I have to purchase a new license. If so thoughts on Vista 64, 32, or back to XP? Will my old PS be able to handle what I listed above. Also, I might be able to spend another 1 or 2 hundred more but only if it is necessary so hit me with your suggestions.

Thanks

Thanks, I thought the PS would be ok but I wanted a second opinion just to be sure,

Also I am a little unsure about the Mobo and RAM. I was reading about the ABIT IP35-E and it seemed like a good choice also. Anyone have an opionion on it verses the GA-P35-DS3L. Both seem pretty similar.

Also, G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2 800 verse the DDR2 1000 model for RAM. I could go with the DDR2 800 instead and save 20 bucks. Is there any noticeable difference between the two.

If the abit ip35-e is cheaper, go with the abit ip35-e. No real difference between ddr2 800mhz or ddr2 1000mhz. I'd drop the e6750 though, and get a e8400/e3110: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2159351&enterthread=y if you need to find a place that sells one.

If you plan on overclocking, the ddr2 1000mhz will be easier to get the e8400 past 3.6ghz. I suppose the PM raanemaan send was about the OEM license. It's iffy, your mobo died, and if you would replace it with a new one, windows might still ask for reactivation, but you would be in your rights to reactive the OEM copy. Replacing it with a new mobo AND cpu might not be allowed though. Up to you to find out.

The PSU should be just fine. If you want a new PSU, check out this one, it's overkill and stuff, but it's a good deal, in case you get a more powerfull videocard or something: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...p?ProductCode=10006237
And just to make sure, do you have a different PSU or something so you can be 100% sure the mobo is dead ?

Well I haven't been following CPUs lately since I wasn't really in the market until forced in when my Motherboard croaked yesterday. But you are right the E8400 seems like it would be a better alternative than the e6750. Assuming I can find one for a reasonable price.

Any issues mating it with the GA-P35-DS3L? On gigabytes web site it says it supports Intel's 45nm CPUs so I guess it is ok.

It should work just fine. Whether or not it works with the Abit IP35-E I'm not sure. It's something to look into though, since the IP35-E is cheaper at the moment.

Just an update I ended up ordering:
CPU - Q6600 ( I encode more than game so the quad made more sense, plus I couldn't find a e8400)
Mobo - GA-P35-DS3L
Ram - 2x2GB of G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2 800

Thanks for the help.
