help overclocking my A64 3400+

I've read the quick and dirty A64 clocking guide by Zebo, but I honestly don't understand any much of it. Maybe I shouldn't even be trying to overclock if this is the case, I don't really know much about this stuff and have a hard time learning, and if that's the case its cool. I can't afford to buy any new stuff though so I'm kinda just seeing if overclocking could help me out and if its safe. I just have stock cooling as well. I was not sure of what my specs were exactly so I took screen shots of my info from SIW and cpuz. screenshots iclude those of my cpu, mainboard, memory, and video information, and also from cpu'z the speeds of each memory slot.

screen's from SIW:

and screen's from cpuz

any help would be appreciated on this, even if its just a small performance boost. As long as its for the most part safe to do, I don't want to blow up my cpu. Thanks

of what parts of bios? or just.. all of it?

also, dumb question perhaps, but is there any way to do that without using a camera to take the picture? Because I do not have one, but I could write down any info from there that is needed.

Ya, try writing down what you see. Just to make sure, you're not on an OEM comp(dell) right?

ya, so just write down what you see in the inital bios screen and go from there.

CLick on cpu clock ratio and tell me what the options are. Does it say things like x10,x9 or does it look like 133,166,200.

Also, are you using any SATA drives?

the K8 CPU clk ratio has options for:

x4 800 mhz
x5 1000 mhz
x6 1200 mhz
x7 1400 mhz
x8 1600 mhz
x9 1800 mhz
x10 2000 mhz
x11 2200 mhz

also the CPU clock has:
Min = 200
Max = 232

Key in a DEC number

and yes, I have only 1 HD, its a WD raptor 72gb SATA drive.

What mobo do you have?

Also, tell me what happens when you hit Ctrl+F1

mobo is

GIGABYTE GA-K8U 754 ULi M1689 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128292

when I hit f1.. I got a new category called:

Advanced Chipset Features:

M1689 configuration:
sub categories:
m1689 Gated clock: Disabled
PCI / 14M / USB clk powerdown: Disabled

AGP configuration:
sub categories:
AGP 3.0 Transfer mode: 8x
fast write: enabled
AGP aperture size (MB): 128 (other options were 32, 64, 256 i think)
AGP secondary Lat timer: 20h

Hypertranscript configuration:
sub categories:
Hammer to M1689 freq. 800 mhz
hammer to m1689 width: 16bits/8bits
m1689 HTT Tristate: Disabled

ULI Hpet: disabled
PCI delay transaction: enabled
max memclock (mhz): auto (available options for 100, 133, 166, 200)
current memclock (mhz): 100

other categories got a few more options it seems too.. ones I noticed were:

under frequency / voltage control:

Spread spectrum: Enabled

PnP / PCI configuration:

PCI latency timer(clk): 32 (options for 32,64, 128)

What type of memory do you have? DDR-400? Current mem clock should be at 200 instead of 100. Try setting max mem block to 133 and see what happens. If you don't post, reset your battery.

from my order history on newegg my 2gb of ram consists of these 2:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146190

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146292

I honestly forgot how it was when I first ordered it, but one was added later I believe. Now that I look at it, they seem a bit different... not sure if thats an issue or not.. I had never built a computer before when I did this one.. I basically knew nothing about any of it. I looked at the invoice, the 1 gb stick was the one I added later.

I have to step out for awhile though, so I cannot try to set it at 133 right now.. I assume you mean the Max memclock (mhz) option thats currently on auto for that.

also, what do you mean by reset your battery? not posting sounds bad to me, heh.

I'll check back in a few hours, have to go for awhile right now though.

thanks !

Sure, if you have any questions, pm me. I do mean max mem clock when I say 133. It might be that the 754 platform can't handle 2gb? I'm not too sure :p. If you don't know how to reset your cmos battery, that might be tricky -_-.

You aint gunna get much out of that old clawhammer. try this for 2.4ghz and 200mhz ram:
240 cpu
10x multi
166 memclock

ok.. so I was curious though. The two sets of ram I have in here, does it matter that one is 184-pin and the other 2 are 240-pin? and one says DDR, one says DDR2?

mushkin 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory

mushkin 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 400 (PC2 3200) System Specific Memory

and, since I dont know how to reset my cmos battery. If I try to push my memclock to 133, or the other suggestions SonicIce posted, what will happen if it doesn't post? Am I kinda screwed at that point? I really can't afford to break anything. Does the memclock being at 100 make much of a difference when it should be at 200?

and If so.. what would happen if I took out the 1 gb stick to see if it clocked it up to 200 automatically? Would having 1 GB at a faster speed be better than having 2gb at half the speed?

I just looked too.. under my mainboard specs it shows for memory:

Memory
Number of Memory Slots 3×184pin
Memory Standard DDR 400
Maximum Memory Supported 2GB

so it can support 2gb, but it says number of mem slots 3x184 pin. are my two 512mb sticks of 240-pin DDR2 messing it up?

Do you have access to the internet besides from that computer? If you do, then go ahead and try to hit 133.

OK, from the looks of it, you have all 3 slots filled with ram do you not? I would try putting the 1gb stick first, then the other 2 after. If you can't post with that, revert back.

I do have access otherwise.. are you asking that so I could come on and be talked through resetting the cmos battery afterward if it does not post? If it could be harmful to my pc I may not want to do it.

Make sure you ground yourself before moving the ram. To ground yourself, just wash your hands.

Ok, here's what you should do. Move the 1GB stick from the 3rd slot to the first slot(Basically, switch the 1gb on one side with the 512 on the opposite side). Then enter bios and tell me what current memclock says(when you press ctrl f1)

ok.. I've changed them around.. and the memclock still shows at 100. I'm not sure if this matters, but it used to check the ram every boot up, not it just says 2000whatever kb OK, I thought I had changed a fast boot option er something before to skip the check, but I could not find that option again. Not sure if that would affect what the memclock showed after I moved them around though.

Can you list the other categories when you press ctrl f1? Do you see CAS in there?

I can't find CAS in there anywhere, even in any sub menu's. All the ones I listed earlier when you said to press f1 seem to be all that was added.
