HELP, need advise on limiting usage of internet/computer!!

Here's my dillema: My younger brother has no computer so I put mine in the living room for him to use. Recently I ordered cable modem so now we have 24/7 internet connection. Ever since then, my brother spend a lot of time online and often times stay up until 5AM or so. We all know what he's been doing on the internet late at nite(looking at indecent pics and stuff..cuz we caught him b4). My mom's concerned and wanted me to talk to him about this....and I did. He said he sometimes has to stay up to do his homwork but the thing is that he just can't control himself and always want to surf web. One nite I woke up at 5 and found him not doing homework but surfing web...

what's the best way to deal with this if you were me??

I don't want to disable his account because he needs to use computer to do homework.
Is there a way to setup his account that he cannot access those dirty websites?

Suggestions please!!!

Thank you so much.

You could do any of the following:

1.) Discontinue service with a cable modem and go back to dialup
2.) Store spyware and charge him a $1 or more for every indecent website or pic he visits
3.) Don't do anything at all and let him ruin his life.

wow you really think he's gonna ruin his life by looking at porn?

I'm pretty sure all of us were on the internet A LOT when we first discovered it.

I'm pretty sure theres a way to allow a username/password to login on a certain period of time each day...

I never used it personally so i wouldnt know.

LMFAO...that's the first that has really made me laugh all day.

Easiest thing to do to limit usage is to unconnect the ethernet cord and power plug every night when you go to bed and keep them stored in your room until morning.

Hahaha, I did the same thing when I first got a computer. Porn is the most amazing thing in the world when you first discover it.

IMO, he'll grow out of it.

When we first discovered it?? what about still? right now even!!! 🙂

Just pull the Network connection between the computer and the modem at night. The computer can be used for it's intended purpose.
Homework. IF he complains that he needs the Net to do H/W, instruct him to do the Net work during the evening.

No hellfire and brimestone will not rain from the skys 😛.

You know, if you really just want to screw with him...you could always hook a webcam up to the PC and put a note next to it saying, "Big Brother Is Watching....and he's disturbed...very disturbed by what he's seeing!"

This sounds like a good idea as well. I'd say pull the modem rather than the ethernet cord. Much easier for him to get a cat5/usb cable than it would be for him to get a cable modem, particularly because the cable connection is linked to the MAC address on the modem.

Or post the God killing kittens picture as the desktop.

I was surprised to recently find a Content Advisor in MSIE that implements an ACL for web site domains (along with rating-based rules).

While this doesn't prevent a person from installing & using IM, another web browser, P2P network software, etc. it would work if you need to enforce MSIE constraints on specific web sites.

If you're not running Win 9x, then you can effectively prevent installation of arbitrary applications as well.

LOL

Thanks for your inputs...this gives me some ideas of what I should do 🙂

Eagle Keeper's suggestion to taking away the cable seems like a great idea...but like Rossman said, i'd rather not babysit him because 1. i don't want to 2. he's too old.

Spyware/content control seems like good idea...any suggestions of good software programs? 🙂

Tell him he can use the computer as much as he wants, but put out 4 conditions to him
- all his crap must get done...ie chores, schoolwork, college crap, etc.
- he must goto bed at night...doesn't matter what time, but he must get sleep
- He must wake up on his own, if anyone has to wake up just to get him outta bed, no net connection because it's keeping him up. If he misses school, DEFINITELY no net connect.
- He must be awake on the weekends and out and about during the day. For crying out loud, he's 15, that kind of usage is hazardous to your health and it's not even work related.

-also, the HW line is bullsh|t. No one in school NEEDS the internet to do work until college, and even then, only on those technical majors like CE, EE, CS, ME. For crying out loud, the library is there for a reason and most have net connections for the few times when the books aren't enough.

after that, I think it'll work itself out.

eh let him be, you weren't like that when you were 15? i mean christ, what else are you gonna do at 15 on the internet besides look at porn
