well i called the water dept, and they said "oh we flushed the lines, it'll be a little cloudy until morning". i was like "it looks like someone had diahrea in my water!" and they were like "oh, hmm well thats too bad".

i have been checking it for a while and it does look a little better, so hopefully tomorrow it will be ok. i am going to be super wary of drinking it for like a week now though D:

If it's from flushing the lines it's nothing dangerous. Just some rust and sediment. Maybe a few microbes. That brain eating amoeba.

Let a tap flow, the more you let it flow the faster it will clear out. Usually like 10 minutes will do but depends how bad it is. This is not really bad, but I think it will taste weird so you probably don't want to drink it.

Of course if they are doing ongoing work then that's another story.

I'm usually not a fan of bottled water but in your situation you might want to get some for drinking, coffee, ect.

I'm sure it's fine now, but don't do this right after hydrant flushing. The more you run the water, the more flow keeps sediment churned up. In the morning, run the water to flush out the sediment from your pipes.

My city said that the water's safe to drink, but my wife has decided it isn't, so we do all our cooking with bottled water on those days.

Be careful she never ever hears the phrase 'Whole Home Reverse Osmosis System'. That'd be a nice $10~15k bill... /cry

I've never even heard of that. Reverse Osmosis is horribly inefficient in terms of water waste. According to wiki, you're dumping out ~85% of all your incoming house water.

Jeez, I wonder what she'd do if you guys were on a well water system like I am. Only filtration is nature.

I don' think it is hard water if "all the faucets water is clear though..."

It is generally just harder to see the yellow if it is pouring out of a faucet and down into a drain. I'd wager that if he lets the water pool in a sink, it would be yellow as well.

We have one for drinking water only. Claims to dump 66%. IE it uses 3 gallons for every 1 gallon of clean water.

It look like your local water service main water is contaminated by rain/flood at the treatment plant, broken water main, or water main is contaminated by working is being done on it.

Call your city water service board for more info.

where i lilve they periodically pressure clean the sewers and it sometimes makes the water brown and mud and sand will come up your bathtub drain

It can't be a soft water issue, since, that is only for hot water.
And hot water should never be hooked up to a toilet.
If it is yellow, and your water source is well water, then it could be minerals.
If it is bright yellow, then that is sulfur.
It could also be iron, and it also depends on the kind of pipes you got at your place.

If city water, then it still could be pipe issue, or they have a problem in the lines, but, if it only happens at the toilet, and nowhere else, then it most likely is minerals. Flushing it a few times should clear it up. If not, then check the pipes...

What? Soft water only for hot water? Nope.. its for the whole house. It should be plumbed into the entire house water supply, not just hot water.

On the subject of brown water, if ever you find yourself needing to use an eye wash station because you spilled something in your eyes, good idea to let it run for at least a few seconds to double check the water. That thing probably has not run in years. :p
