so i got freaked out just now when i flushed the toilet, and the water all came in yellow. looks just like someone peed in it even though it was just flushed. doesn't smell bad, and the water in the tank is also yellow (i checked). all the faucets water is clear though... what the heck could be causing this?

Clean your toilet once in a while.

The whiteness will make you smile.

Your terlet water will be so clear,

it will no longer look like cheap beer.

Could be an old rusty short leg of iron pipe that run to the toilet.

How old is the house?

You have hard water. If you have a water softener, you need to add salt. When my water turns yellow, that means I forgot to add salt to the softener and that always fixes the issue.

Run a faucet for a few minutes. Maybe the city did some work on the lines. that will cause a bunch of brown water to go through the lines and it just needs to be flushed (no pun intended) out. With the toilet what happens is this water makes it into the tank and starts to stain the inside walls and it takes a longer time to clear up.

I don' think it is hard water if "all the faucets water is clear though..."

The only way that only the toilet water is coloured from city water or hard water in this scenario is that the entire house is on a filter system/water softener, and the toilet piping is on its own branch separate from the rest of the house.

Did you just get married by any chance? My buddy said when his new wife moved in, his toilet water turned blue.

It can't be a soft water issue, since, that is only for hot water.
And hot water should never be hooked up to a toilet.
If it is yellow, and your water source is well water, then it could be minerals.
If it is bright yellow, then that is sulfur.
It could also be iron, and it also depends on the kind of pipes you got at your place.

If city water, then it still could be pipe issue, or they have a problem in the lines, but, if it only happens at the toilet, and nowhere else, then it most likely is minerals. Flushing it a few times should clear it up. If not, then check the pipes...

Could be that no other tap was used and the toilet was first so the brown water went there first.

gah the tap water is brown now too!!!
It look like your local water service main water is contaminated by rain/flood at the treatment plant, broken water main, or water main is contaminated by working is being done on it.

Call your city water service board for more info.
