Never. Well, overkill when it comes to power - but, not when it comes to sound quality, or the lower frequencies that they can produce. Even if you drop $700 on a new sub and never use all the power, hopefully, the sub is capable of hitting 20Hz or a bit below for excellent sound reproduction from some of the DVDs out there.
With that being said, I have a pro amp pushing 550 watts per side which I'll use to drive my Shivas. Sure, I'll never use all that the amp has to offer, but the price for the extra 250 watts (a side) was a no-brainer and I'd like to use the lower side of the amp's power without straining it much.
