So I ordered a brand new VTF-3 MK II from Hsu Research because of the discounted price and free shipping. It arrived yesterday in a huge box weighing just short of 90 lbs.
I lugged it home, and unpacked it, marveling at its sheer bulk. It's easily twice the size of the old 12" JBL PB-12 subwoofer I used to have, and definitely large enough to use as an end table. Unfortunately I have to exchange it because of a gouge in the corner, but I digress.
I hooked it up to my HT system, did a quick calibration, and fired up the demo CD.
*Wwwwwooooooommmmmmmmooooooooooowwwwwwwwwooooooooommmmmmmmrumblerumblerumble*
The floor didn't start vibrating, it was rolling. My g/f ran out of the other room to see what the hell was making that noise. So far, so good.
I put on LOTR: FOTR to see how it fared in the Mines of Moria scene. I fast forwarded to where Took knocks the armor into the well.
"Fool of a Took!"
...
*rumble rumble*
*rumble thump thump rumble*
*rumble thump thump thump*
*rumble rumble WHAMMMMMMMMMM!*
I literally bolted out of my seat at the couch in surprise. I didn't realize the sub would hit that HARD and that LOUD all of a sudden.
I had my g/f go outside to make sure we wouldn't piss off the neighbors. About this time the orcs were just about to breach the door of the room.
The door finally collapsed with a resounding "KA-CHUNGGGGGGG" which made one of my dogs yelp in surprise and try to hide behind me on the couch. It seriously felt like the foundations of the house were at risk of destruction. The fabric of my pants legs fluttered back and forth from the sound pressure, the floor shook mightily, and my chest felt like some phantom force decided to use me as a punching bag.
My g/f burst back inside and said "turn that down NOW! The neighbors are going to be PISSED!"
Apparently it's loud enough to hear from the street, 30 feet away, and probably more than enough to wake the neighbors.
I went to turn down the gain....
...it was at ~10%.
Think I have enough headroom?
