I have searched the archives (a GREAT source of info) and read countles threads on how to set up a dual boot (including the helpful "dissertation on partitioning by SUO). I want to dual boot 2k and 98 (FAT32) and have just a few questions.

I think I want to set up a small (~500MB) partition at the front of my HDD where boot and swap files will stay. Which files from these 2 OSes need to be on that part? How do I get these files, and only these files, on that partition? I think for 2k I need ntldr, ntdetect and boot.ini on the front part (which needs to be active). I am unsure about the 98 files needed. And have no clue how to set up my swap file there - maybe a utility such as Norton?

These questions were probably answered in the archives and I just didn't understand :(

I am not sure I am following you. Do you already have dual boot setup and working? If you do and now want to change around partitions. This very bad since this will change around the drive letters.

Best thing to do is start fresh. make your first 500 meg partition then your other 2 for each os. Then install 98 first on the D drive then 2000 on e drive. the install will put appropriote files in the c drive.

To choose the drive that the swap files uses you can find it in the control panel> system applett the 2 os's are different but both settings are in system applet.

Sorry, I am setting up a NEW dual boot - clean install - with 1 HDD.

Let me see if I understand you, SemperFi. If I make a C: (500mb), D: for 98 and E: for 2k; then during installation 2k and 98 will automatically put the necessary boot files on C. Then I go to the Performance Options button of the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog box (for 2k) and set the C: pagefile size and clear all other pagefiles on other partitions? Both OSes will use the same pagefile?

Do I understand correctly? Sure looks easy :)

Yep thats what I am saying.

I am not real sure about sharing page files but remember reading somewhere that it can be done. Maybe someone else knows where to find this info.

Also install 98 first then 2000 will detect 98 and setup bootloader automaticly. It can be done 2000 first but will require several extra steps.
