pawned- because at least it sounds like another word in the english dictionary. The alternative (poned) sounds dumb when said.

OWNED...it comes from the underground hacker scene in the 90s. If you get a root account on a machine somewhere, you "own" that server. Or conversely the server got owned.

It got popular because people started defacing boxen with things like "Halik owns this box".. so the word would around on IRC that halik owned www.foo.com.

p0wn is own as much as pohl =pole= poll

Personally, I take off the entire o sound, and insert a p - with no vowel. so it's pronounced [unintelligible noise]ned

the unintelligible noise comes out something like a grunt with a p leader and an nnnn trailer.

i've never heard it pronounced pawned. your friend wins, even though i think he's the loser. no one "pawns" someone; you either own them or pown them. pown = persian ownage, for the record 😉

It's an internet term and if you speak it in real life it is pronounced owned.

It's like saying LOL around people instead of actually laughing out loud. 😉

anyone who didn't vote "powned" is a noob, simple as that.

pwn is pronounced "poned" ... but if you actually say the word in real life, you have other issues.

remember it was originally a misspelling of 'owned', but if you just say 'owned', no implication of 'pwned' is present. you must work the P in front of it, to become literally "powned"
