Poll.

Imo, I pronounce it pawned, like a chess pawn, while my friend asserts that it must be pronounced "own", because that's what it's derived from. I counter that, since it has a slightly different connotation, or just simply for clarity, a difference in pronunciation is essential to convey the actual word.

The majority of ATOTs know how to create a poll? I say what HamburgerBoy says, but 90% with the ed. pown-ed.

Edit: You got the poll up just in time. 😀

ok. why would it be pawn if it comes from own?

It's just a different word, and "pone" can be more easily mistaken for "own" than "pawn" can be - also, "pone" suggests the typo "pown."

Besides, words don't have to mimic their derivatives by a long shot.

Either way though, my point is that it shouldn't be pronounced as a straight "owned"

It's an internet term and if you speak it in real life it is pronounced owned.

It's like saying LOL around people instead of actually laughing out loud. 😉

Connotation my ass. Owned and Pwned are synonymous aside from the fact that one is more X-TREME!!!1eleven Infact I think we should start a newer, better one... PXND... pronounced... uh....

Edit: pwned IS essentially a misspelling (probably intentional) of owned. It goes no deeper than that. Only an internet noob would spend so much time considering the origin of "pwned."

Yea, that would be a connotation difference...

It should be pronounced as owned, since that is what you're really trying to say, or type.

I bet "Pwned" probably caught on over time as FPS fraggers hurredly tried to type "owned" every time they got a kill, but were trying to type so quickly that the word was often mispelled as "pwned".

That's exactly where it came from and then it became "L33+" to say.

Exactly... it's the same thing and the result of poor/intentionally poor spelling. It has however been given a life as it's own. Generally in gaming (at least back when I use to CS)... Pwn > Own and not 100% the same. Never heard anyone use "pawn." That just sounds gay.

They already did, he laughed at the people saying 'pone' and told them to say it correctly ('own')
