Help me secure my dorm room...

I've got a lot of expensive stuff in my dorm room, and I am attempting to get permission from the RA to install a new lock for my door. I want to get a simple lockpick device, so I can show him how easy it is to get into my dorm room. What is the best thing to use? A pick gun? or hand picks? I've never done any lockpicking before, and I am just curious how it's done. Hopefully if I can show him that I can open my door without a key in 30 seconds or so, he will consider allowing me to upgrade my lock.

Anyways, a pickgun is by far the BEST way to pick a lock but they are only for locksmiths. You may also be able to use the key things. I did it back in 8th grade when i was a little punk. Lockpicking is a fun hobby.

I really doubt the RA will let you. That said... his boss will have to make the decision. Due to fire laws...I don't see how they can let you install a new lock.

yea, there's no way you're gonna get a new lock in a dorm. They have master keys so that they can get into each room, normally. Fire safety regulations probably compound it. Get renter's insurance...

What are you thinking bringing a 27" Wega to the dorms? I mean, come on... Bring the crappy 19 or 25 inch, not the Wega. I mean, I don't mean to make you feel bad here, but really...

As far as securing your room goes, good luck. They won't allow you to install a new lock. The reason is that the dorms have to have key access to your room in case of a fire. Best way to secure your stuff is to take it all home until you get an apartment and leave it there. Then buy a cheaper TV, stereo, etc, that won't attract as much attention. As much as you love that Wega, if you are that worried about it getting stolen, its gotta go.

Do yourself a Favor and get Renters Insurance like everyone is saying. Its very cheap! You should have it anyway since having the Wega.
I get my renters insurance through my car insurance. I think its just $12 a month more. If you stuff does get stolen....O well your covered.

You can buy an electronic doorstop alarm, that when activated, emits a shrill siren. Not only will it draw attention to the intruder, it helps stop the door from moving in. You obviously won't be able to leave it right up against the door when away, but a thief won't know that once the door moves inward, 2' 3", your alarm goes off.

tou MAY be covered under your parents' homeowners/renters insurance for certain items. Ask them if you are covered and if that particular equipment is, too.

Hmmm, interesting. What about a more permanent solution, like an alarm system that I can arm when I leave? The dorm is in the ghetto of Buffalo :disgust:

rbloedow: It would make sense to me that the RA is not the only one who has a master key...the fire marshal, many people in the school administration, etc..I'm bringing my 32" JVC TV next year, and my XBOX, and my computer setup... I'm not paranoid, but I will make sure to inquire about renter's insurance as well.

I just talked to my mom, she said it's covered under our insurance, but there's a $500 deductable. Earlier in the year, some kid was robbed @ knifepoint. Obviously now I've got a couple stun guns, & a crowbar
