Stun guns.... crow bars.... Nah, what you need is a katana. Now that is intimidating.

pick guns are expensive, get the picks, but its going to be really hard for double sided locks (you will know by looking at the key that opens it, if it has grooves on both sides like a car key)

Personally in the dorms, I considered everything in there expendable. Period. Sure it may not be stolen but having a can of coke spilled on the back of the tv will have just about the same effect: one tv that you cannot use. Beyond that, get renter's insurance. Just remember, you cannot control who your roommate allows in the room or your roommate's actions. (assuming you have a roommate)

A dorm room definitely isn't a place to have terribly valuable stuff laying around. I'd say leave it home. You're not going to get the to let you change the lock, and as someone said, if you show the RA you can pick a lock, then if someone's lock gets picked, guess who they're going to come after first...
And, as someone else also said, you can't control your roommate. I had a slacker roommate whose daily schedule was like this:
2:00PM: Get up and go to the bathroom.
2:20PM: Go back to sleep.
3:00PM-Midnight: Hang out in the room down the hall smoking up, drinking, playing PSX, wondering why his grades are so much worse than everyone who actually shows up for class.
Midnight-3:00AM: Go out somewhere else to drink and smoke.
Repeat ad nauseum and never ONCE lock the door during this time....or even take the key with you.

YMMV, but I'd say if you're afraid it's going to be stolen, you probably don't want it there.

First off, you probably should not have all that really expensive stuff with you.

I would beat your ass if I lived under you and heard that subwoofer all day and night.

Anyway, when i lived in a bad area I bought some of those master lock cable locks for equiptment and locked my dual monotirs and case all together. The good ones are expensive but well worth it...

When I first moved into my dorm room as a freshman, I had just built a brand new computer. I was worried about it getting stolen, so I bought one of those security wires that you run through the computer, to your monitor, and then to another point, like the wall or a desk. You have to super-glue a piece onto whatever it is you want to lock down so the wire can be run through it. That way the computer is sortof locked onto the desk. It would only take wire-cutters to cut through the wire, but its better than having nothing! Just like a car alarm, its a theft deterrent. I don't know if you want to super-glue something to your Wega or your subs... But it should help to prevent theft... And also might help to prevent your roomie from walking in with his friends and taking stuff.

Additionally, you can look for renter's insurance with a lower deductible like everyone was saying.

That's what I like about my dorms...keycard access. And apparently if it's tried too many times with the wrong card the lock is totally disabled for 30 minutes or something. It's also reported down to the front desk & is monitored.

<< The dorm is in the ghetto of Buffalo >>

Which school are you dorming at? Buff State, Canisius? The only school around here you might have a problem in Buff State. Those dorms are hella ghetto.

The dorms of UB, SOUTH campus, it's definitely in the ghetto. I enjoy the looks I get from these black kids who walk by & hear insane bass, & then see a tall white kid @ the computer. :)

well you can always deface your stuff... scratch your name and address all over everything:) not on the back mind you.. but where its very obvious and impossible to cover up:) devalues it yes, but if its worth something to you and your not going to sell it.. it really really devalues it to other ppl.

<< dumb ass... if you do show them that you can pick lock, whenever someone's dorm room gets broken into, they will blame you. >>

hehehe.... lol

Which one is that?

You should either leave them home or have them insured!

Indeed. My roomate last year had the habit of walking off and leaving the door propped open. He'd return an hour or two later. He'd also loan out my software and movies w.o telling me. He'd forget to get them back from the person he gave them too. I lost a couple games and Braveheart that way :(

You might be able to install a stand alone motion detector/proximity alarm system.
