I want a new TV for the bedroom. It needs to be LCD, 1080P, and under $1300, preferably $1200. Other than that no real conditions. I know very little about LCD TV's so any help would be appreciated.

If it has to be from Dell, then without question go with the Samsung 40B550. Why Dell though?

I have some money with them that needs spent and I have no need for another computer. I was really looking for something in the 46" range. Their are a couple Sony's, a Vizio, a Samsung, and a Sharp that fit in the price range.

If you know very little about the LCD's then why does it have to be an LCD? Why not plasma, rear-projection, etc. Also, why must it be 1080p....are you just listening to what the manufacturers want you know? 1080p may be a waste of money depending on your viewing conditions.

I have a plasma in the living room and it is a power sucking, heat producing beast. I don't want another one. I want 1080P as it will have a PS3 that will double as a blue-ray which is why I want 1080P. Distance is probably around twelve feet or so.

That is fine looking TV. I am really starting to waver on the size and am considering as smaller 40-42 set. It is nice to see Samsung doing well. I had always been a Sony guy when it came to TV's. Are they much worse? Anything more indepth why they are better. Heck I am still trying to figure out the difference between Sony's S and V series.

Sitting 12 feet away you need all the size you can get; I would advise against dropping down below 46.

Samsung builds the screen for Sony. Sony just adds their name and some extra electronics to the package. Samsungs are at the same or better quality for much less money.

I have a Samsung LN40B550 and it's a fantastic set. Couldn't be happier.

Thanks, I appreciate the advise and was ready to buy, then they updated the sale. They have the Sony KDL-46S4100 for $999. Is the Samsung worth $280 more?

Nope

Like I said, Sony = Samsung screen with different electronics. Sony, Samsung, Sharp, and LG are all tops when it comes to LCDs. If the Sony is cheaper you'll be pleased with it I'm sure.

Missed this...but I have to say. WHY NOT 1080P?

Seriously, 720p is ok but the price difference is almost zero for the screen sizes being looked at. No reason not to 1080p at this point. None at all.

Because if you're sitting back 12' from a 46" TV - you can't even see all the detail in 720 - so paying even one dollar more is throwing your money away. You might as well burn it. Human visual acuity has its limits.

Well, if you plan to watch a lot of SD channels, 480i upconverted to 720p should look better than 480i upconverted to 1080p. But then at 12 feet and 40" screen, an SDTV might do just as well ;)

So? Why are you going to say "720p is fine" when later you'll hook a Blu-Ray player up and say "God I should have gone 1080p"? Do you throw TVs out every 6 months? No of course not, so why settle on "good enough"? Do you sit 2" from the screen so you can pickout every damn flaw?

Seriously people, 1080p is CHEAP, FRIGGEN CHEAP!

FWIW: I can tell the difference on some Blu-Ray movies when it's not running 1080/24

I went with the Sony KDL-46S4100 and added a PS3 for $300 more, sick price. $1300 for a 46" blue ray set-up is a pretty screamin' deal in my book.

That's not bad, I'm not a Sony fan when it comes to their TVs due to their pricing compared to the rest of the market, but that's a good deal you got.

They came in today and oh my god what a picture. We just finished watching Lakeview Terrace on BR and the picture is absolutely amazing(movie was meehh). I thought my 720P plasma had a good picture but it cannot hold a candle this thing. Speakers are pretty darn good too. My games won't be here until tomorrow but I downloaded the demos for the new motostorm and Killzone 2 and was very impressed with them as well. It's kind of wierd now, we have a better TV in the bedroom than the living room. I think I am going to have to upgrade my netflix account for BR.
