Okay if you had to get a neon, would you opt for dodge or plymouth? When did they start refining them a little more, say like replacing the crappy head gasket, making them quieter, when did they start using the 4 speed transmision, basically what is the best year to get? But I would like to avoid a brand new car as I don't think I can afford it, so what year is most worth the price it is going for now? Thanks

<< Alright that sounds like a good idea.

One other question, how do you determine if you need full coverage on a car or just liability. I mean I'm sure there is no easy way to do it. But what would you go by, the year of the car, the price you paid for it, the condition it's in or a combination of things.

Also once again can someone tell me on average how many miles a year people put on thier cars?
>>

With a 10% reduction for getting renter's insurance for my apt ($150/year), my car insurance for my 92 Civic DX is ~80/month for full comprehensive coverage with NO deductable. I have had no accidents, two tickets, and a 22 year old male. The car is mechanically decent, aesthetically good-poor, and worth about 2.5K or so with 120K. Liability was only like 80/year cheaper, and with no deductable on the comprehensive there's no way Im turning that down.

I put about 10K/year on my car, the standard is about 12K i think.

I was also leaning towards dodge, and I was thinking '99 was prolly the best year for the money, but i am not totally sure of this

Dodge and Plymouth Neons are identical. It does not matter which name is on the car. Shop for the best deal on the car that is in the best shape.

Dodge and Plymouth's are probably identical. Unless you find an awesome deal on a 99 Plymouth Neon, I would go for the Dodge Neon.

Alright at the same price get a dodge, but if the plymouth is cheaper go for it. I got that, any specific year better then the others?

I have a couple more final questions.

1. Hypothetically speaking, assuming all variables are the same and the cars are driven and maintained exactly the same when does a newer american car start becoming more reliable then an older foreign car. Say for example a 1999 Dodge neon with 47,000 miles on it compared to a 1995 Honda civic with 78,000 miles on it. Would the vast majority of you still say the civic is the more reliable bet? If so at what time do you think the neon would be the more reliable car?

2. Can someone confirm for me when they started putting the more reliable head gaskets in the neons? I believe someone said 97 or 98 earlier in the thread, but I would just like to confirm it.

question one will vary on who answers it.. I had a honda civic crap out on me after 60k miles, needed a new engine. :disgust:
i was not happy.

If you look at the resale values, honda's keep there value very well compared to neons. A 95 civic with 70k miles on it can cost you more than a 99 neon with half as many miles. So that would mean to me that its still the better car.

its all personal preference though.

as for the gasket question, i believe 98. but thats just what i think, i have nothing to support that.

Yeah I did notice that the civics have better resale values, like I said I am looking for something in the 5000.00 dollar range and those two cars seem to be whats available at that price. So I will have to start looking into the civics, but I don't like you saying yours died at 60,000 miles, I am assuming that was an isolated incident though. If I were to get a civic can someone recommend which one two get as I have noticed there are quite a few differant looks and models to the civic. I want something that doesn't look like crap.

As for the head gasket I think that 98 was the last year for the faulty gasket, I have looked into it further and that number seems to be what I find the most.

If I opt for the honda civic which one would you recommend for around 4000.00?

Don't worry about that. Seriously, if you could ask each registered user if they had one car that was a complete piece of crap, you'd probably come up with at least one of every car manufactured since 1950.

Okay well sentra's are almost as tough as the civic's, have very slightly lower gas mileage and are alot cheaper. You could probably get a nice newer one and since you dont seem comfortable with buying older cars I would go for the sentra(wait a second thats what I did......)

The sentra sounds like a good car, but it doesn't look that appealing from the pics I have seen

Thanks, I have already been looking on autotrader for a while, but I really appreciate the help. By the way what civic is the most sporty looking? Also what do you all think about eagle talons

well uh you're looking for a fairly reliable car with decent maintenance cost and relatively low price. I dont think any car that fits those requirements to be apealing in any way. You cant have everything in a car, and when you're looking at what you need you have to decide what you cant have in a car and what you can have. Having a nice looking car like a viper or even a mustang or something is definately NOT AN OPTION FOR YOU. I thinks thats why youre trying to convince yourself that dodge neon's are decent cars, because they look better than everything else you can buy.

Also on the resale value thing, if people liked the car=more demand for used cars of that model=higher resale value because of suply and demand. Same thing the other way around, and guess what Neon resale value obeys these rules too and that why I can tell you people dont want them, or at least they want them alot less than they want Honda's.

I am not really trying to convince myself the neon is a good car. I am asking if it is. Some said no and gave no reason, few said no and gave a reason, more then a few said yes and gave a reason. That made me think maybe the neon was a good bet for the money. I would be happy buying a civic if a lot of people tell me that it is reliable. Well quite a few have said it's a good car, so I am definately looking at it as an option. I am just trying to find a nice looking model. I am in no way set on the neon, but for as cheap as it is, if it is somewhat reliable then I am gonna consider it. I mean I don't expect any car to have no problems over 3-5 years, but I would like to avoid a piece of crap car, so I am trying to research them. But some of the cars mentioned in this thread don't really appeal to me in the looks department. I mean I am not looking for a corvette or viper or anything that flashy, but I also don't want a boxy little car that looks exactly like every other boxy little car out there.
