Help me pick a car!

Hey guys. Back again, and I think I have my eyes set on a 2005 Mazda 3 S. With the 2.3L 4 cylinder in it, it comes to $18k standard with automatic transmission(kind of a key feature for me here). Now, $18k is MSRP, and I am going thru http://www.hileymazdahurst.com/ of Hurst, just outside of Ft. Worth. Now here is the thing. Right off the bat I told him I wanted between $250-325 a month for payments. I can put down $1500 cash, so I figured it would help. We never negotiated a price, simply because I can't get the car because my name is on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee note, in which will be taken off as soon as possible(brother is taking over payments on it) because my dad was the co-signer, and can add my brother on the note, and take me off, and after 33 months of NO problem-payments, I can get a new car, just have to be taken off the note. Now, before I left, he told me my payments would be in the mid to high $300's, which is not what I asked for. I did not talk him down on the price, because I wasnt there to do that.....and thats why I am here. I would like to know how much I actually can talk this dealer down on. I can afford $350 a month, but would be better if it was less. I currently pay $260 a month on my jeep. So what do u guys think I can do to get this guy to come down on the price? Your help is much appreciated, and remember, I am 22, and this is my FIRST BRAND NEW CAR, and will be all mine, so help me, dont joke about me please, thanks in advance!

Ok, now, I am not sure if I will buy brand new, or go back to carmax and get a second car, since that is where I bought my 99 Jeep Cherokee. I want to make a list here, rather, id like to make a poll, but have no clue how to, so enlighten me on how to, anyways.

Volkswagon Jetta

It is a mistake to negotiate using monthly payment. You need to work out the monthly payment based on the price of the car, and negotiate the price of the car.

As for the actual cars, I don't have a preference.

Ugh... one of the first rules of negotiating price is to first negotiate the final price of the car and NOT the monthly payment rates. When you get an agreed upon price, you can THEN shop around at banks for the best rate.

As I said in the last thread I don't see you getting taken off the note. I frequently told people the same as an F&I manager knowing it almost never happens.

When it comes to talking down the price it depends on what invoice is and what rebates are available. Currently there are no rebates/ incentives on the Mazda 3 except fro New 2004 which is $1000. Invoice on a 3S is ~$1000 behind MSRP. Doesn't leave a whole lot of room for negotiation.

Most of your down payment is going to be taken up by TT&T so really you are putting nothing down against the price of the car:

Texas:
Sales or Use Tax: 6.25%
Title Fee: $33
Registration Fee: $40.80 to $64.90
Plate Transfer Fee: $2.50
Total Estimated Fees: $1225 to $1425

The payment he gave you is in line with the price and depends on your rate which I doubt will be super low. Current average 60month loan rate is 6.34%. 18K @ 6%/60 months is $347/month

There is no point in responding to this thread with car suggestions. Go test drive.

Mazda 3 is a fine choice. It's a good car, I own a 2005.
Here's the if's.
If you can get it, out the door (TT+L included) financing 18,500
If you can get 5.0% interest for 60 mos.
Then your payment will be right about $350.

The way to research it is go to edmunds.com, get the TMV (True Market Value) price for the car you want.
The find an interest calculator on the web, and calculate how much you can spend by putting in what you want to pay/mo., interest rate, and length of the loan, then you can calculate how much you'll be able to spend on the car.
Negotiate from there.

The first mistake you made was telling him what payments you wanted to make. The first thing you need to do is set up an account with a local credit union and see what they can do for financing. Unless Mazda is running some financing promotions, a local credit union will provide you the best rates you can get.

After you get pre-approved (assuming you can be) then walk over to the dealer and negotiate a price. Telling him what payments you want to make puts all the control in his hands.

You are going into the start of the month on a hot moving car, assuming you are still looking at the Mazda3. He's not going to go under invoice unless it is a special promotion they are running. I'd shoot him an offer of 2% over invoice and see if he'll bite. He makes a little money, you still get a good deal, and you don't hate each other at the end of the process.

Listen to QuitBanningMe and go DRIVE THEM. Why is everyone so interested in what everyone else thinks? I don't care what you think, the Mazda 3 is kind of ugly IMO. And you shouldn't care what I think either. Once you actually drive all of the cars your looking at, and even more - the descision will be a lot easier. Obviously you haven't driven many, if any at all, or you would have a better idea of what you wanted.

As long as your getting pissed at the only people that are actually trying to help you, your never going to get anything from these forums any way. And if you post again in reply to this, your still not out there driving, so get off your a$$ already.

Take a look at the Kia Spectra5. The Spectra5 is a nice car, i've checked it out myself. It's got a great warranty, safe (comes with side curtain airbags and all that good stuff), and its inexpensive to boot. I know "...its a KIA..." but you shouldn't limit your options just because of name brand. Although, I'd get this car in manual transmission. I'm not sure how the auto rates. The Spectra5 would come to about $4000 less than the mazda3.

of course this is just my opinion.
